Maintenance Worker

Big Island Candies is seeking an additional Maintenance Worker at our Hilo location to perform a variety of jobs independently and with team, including groundskeeping, as well as basic tasks in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and building maintenance.

Essential Duties include:

• Perform daily groundskeeping jobs, such as but not limited to, planting, weeding, fertilizing, irrigating and lawn mowing;
• Trim hedges, and prune trees;
• Apply herbicides and insecticides;
• Monitor pest-control program;
• Use various hand tools, for example, hammers, screwdrivers, shovels and picks;
• Operate various power tools, for example, a table saw, chainsaw, leaf blower, lawn mower and power washer;
• Perform general maintenance tasks, such as but not limited to, painting, mudding, re-lamping, AC filter changes, light ballast replacement, and flooring repairs;
• Maintain adequate supply of cleaning materials/agents and equipment; submit order for supplies as needed;
• Repair existing office and factory cabinets, desks and tables;
• And other duties as required.

Skills, qualifications and attributes include:

• Knowledge of:
  • Gardening methods and tools;
  • Equipment and materials used in groundskeeping, carpentry, and general building maintenance;
  • Trees, plants and shrubs native to Hawaii;
  • Herbicide and insecticide applications;
  • Basic math;
  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and chemicals relevant to trade and duties;
  • Safe, proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions;
• Enjoy working outdoors and providing support to various departments.
• Work safely, professionally and independently;
• Must have a valid driver's license;
• Must be able to attain forklift certification (provided in-house), if one has not already been achieved.

Hours are Monday thru Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. May be asked to work longer than an 8-hour shift and weekends, as well as change of work schedule, depending on operational needs and without notice. Must be able to rotate with crew to work the night shift during the holiday season (for example: Noon to 8:30 pm). Hours subject to change during peak season such as but not limited to night shift to support operations.
