GENERAL PURPOSE

Under some supervision, the Test Lab Technician will follow documented test methods to perform accurate and repeatable tests by safely operating precision instruments and complex test devices. Monitor and record the condition of the product before, during and upon completion of the tests. Analyze and present test results using simple descriptive statistics, computer software, graphs, and tables.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ability to make sound decisions without all relevant data present.

  • Accurately communicate test progress and results to Test Lab management and customers.

  • Analyze test data including, but not limited to, simple descriptive statistics.

  • Assist in the demonstration of tests or explanation of requirements to vendors and/or clients.

  • Follow all safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for themselves and others in the lab.

  • Is action oriented, seizes opportunities.

  • Lays out work in a well-planned and organized matter.

  • Maintain confidentiality on projects.

  • Maintain detailed and accurate data as required.

  • Maintain housekeeping in the lab and office area.

  • Maintains two-way dialogue with team to coordinate work.

  • Manages small to midsize projects.

  • Must be mechanically inclined (i.e. be able to set up test without having specific instructions or previous experience).

  • Professional knowledge of manufacturing processes of office product.

  • Professional knowledge of Office Furniture Testing standards and equipment.

  • Responsible for performing routine maintenance or minor repairs on test machines.

  • Review and approve peer test results and reports.

  • Set up and conduct tests according to established objectives (i.e. ANSI/BIFMA, Herman Miller Test Methods, ASTM, NFPA, etc.).

  • Use hand tools and shop equipment to build metal, wood or plastic test fixtures as needed for conducting tests.

  • Write formal documents (approximately one per day) that accurately represent the test data and conditions.

  • Performs additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

  • Technical or Vocational associate’s degree (such as in Mathematics, Science) or equivalent experience.

  • 2 years of mechanical testing experience in a furniture test lab.

Skills and Abilities

  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

  • Ability to solve problems with sense of urgency in a fast paced environment.

  • Experience testing to ANSI/BIFMA standards.

  • Experience working with and troubleshooting electronic instrumentation (load cells, string pots, signal conditioners, wiring, etc.); experience in the use of machinery, computerized controls, and data collection devices is preferred.

  • Good communication skills; aptitude in job-related skills; good technical writing skills; experience writing and reviewing formal technical reports is preferred.

  • Ability to effectively use office automation, communication, software and tools used in the Herman Miller office environment.

  • Must be able to perform all essential functions of the position with or without accommodations.

  • May be required to occasionally lift 50 lbs.
