Purpose: To equip and empower the community at Pillar to indwell the story of God through worship of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in its weekly gatherings around Word and Sacrament in such a way that the “creative liturgical life” at Pillar is rooted in the historic Christian faith and expressed in new and creative ways. In addition, to do this so that the broad artistic gifts of the community are celebrated and given back to the community as acts of worship.

Qualifications & Key Qualities:

Bachelors degree or higher.
3-5 years of experience in worship arts ministries preferred.
Capacity to provide musical leadership as well as lead musicians and teams of musicians.
Ability to nurture volunteer commitment toward a robust vision of worship, church community, and missional engagement with culture.
Operational skills to implement projects and keep track of details well.
Capacity to take initiative and anticipate what needs to be done.
Capacity to be adaptive and see challenges as opportunity for growth and new possibilities.
Ability to work collaboratively alongside others and share ownership of projects.
Capacity to understand the unique culture of Pillar and embody that in all aspects of the work.

Commitment to the historic Christian faith, outlined by the three ecumenical creeds as well as an appreciation for the Reformed theological tradition.

Responsibilities: The primary areas of responsibility include providing operational and systems leadership and management for the worship arts life of Pillar (across all campuses), serving as the worship leader at the Warehouse, and collaborating with the Pastor of Worship Arts and the Lead Pastor in shared projects to serve the wider church and the West Michigan community, as well as support Pillar’s growth.

1. Operational and Systems Implementation for the Worship Life of Pillar:

1. Lead the worship arts team in its operational life (setting the agenda for team meetings, facilitating the meetings, etc.).
2. Oversee the the details of Sunday worship, setting appropriate deadlines and ensuring clear communication between key participants.
3. In collaboration with the various campuses, schedule musicians in a timely manner for all sites.
4. Coordinate with the AV Tech Director so that the AV tech details are managed smoothly and effectively.
5. In collaboration with the Pastor of Worship Arts, schedule and lead rehearsals.
6. In collaboration with the Pastor of Worship Arts, develop and manage the music repertoire and liturgy library (manage charts, scores, and database of services and worship words).
7. Along with the Pastor of Worship Arts and Lead Pastor, develop the multi-campus approach to leading worship and implement the operational side of the system.

2. Project Implementation:

1. Support new worship arts initiatives including albums, creative liturgical offerings for the wider church, conferences, etc.
2. Support the growing small effort as it interacts with worship arts and as it continues to grow and develop.

3. Worship Leadership:

1. Guide the Sunday morning realities of worship at various assigned sites, including: team leadership, musical leadership, equipment set and tear down, AVL, etc.
2. Collaborate with the Campus Pastors on any unique community initiatives that include worship arts (giving special attention to the Warehouse and the Chapel).
3. Be flexible and adaptable as needs arise with Pillar’s “Growing Small” initiative and future sites that may emerge.

Relationships & Accountability: The Director of Worship Arts is directly responsible to the Executive Pastor, works collaboratively with the Pastor of Worship Arts and the Warehouse Campus Pastor (along with the rest of pastoral team), and is generally accountable to the Lead Pastor and the Pillar Council.

Compensation: The financial package will vary according to experience and skill.
