Summary: 
The Engineer II, Battery Filling Equipment is an ESMI-based engineer responsible for providing specialized technical support to LG Energy Solution and affiliated manufacturing entities throughout North America.

This position supports the installation, commissioning, startup, model changeover, production stabilization, troubleshooting, maintenance, and optimization of lithium-ion battery electrolyte filling equipment. The Engineer serves as a technical expert in high-volume electrolyte filling processes, precise electrolyte-volume control, Hibar pump systems, filling nozzles, vacuum chambers, and related mechanical and pneumatic systems.

The Engineer travels to North American manufacturing sites to support new production-line launches, resolve complex equipment and process issues, improve filling accuracy and equipment reliability, and transfer specialized operational and maintenance knowledge to locally hired engineers and technicians.


Responsibilities: 

  • Provide advanced technical support for electrolyte filling equipment at ESMI and other LG Energy Solution or affiliated North American manufacturing entities.
  • Lead or support equipment installation, mechanical checkout, setup, commissioning, acceptance testing, startup, trial production, and mass-production stabilization.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex electrolyte filling equipment issues involving filling pumps, nozzles, piping, valves, vacuum chambers, sensors, actuators, pneumatic systems, and related control interfaces.
  • Establish, adjust, and optimize electrolyte filling parameters to maintain accurate and consistent fill volumes during high-volume production.
  • Identify and correct electrolyte-volume hunting, filling variation, inconsistent discharge, pressure instability, and other conditions affecting process capability and product quality.
  • Perform advanced maintenance, inspection, repair, setup, and troubleshooting of Hibar pumps and associated electrolyte-delivery components.
  • Calibrate, inspect, clean, maintain, and replace filling nozzles and related components to ensure accurate electrolyte dispensing and reliable equipment operation.
  • Detect and resolve vacuum chamber leakage, sealing failures, pressure loss, and related vacuum-performance problems.
  • Analyze equipment failures, filling defects, downtime, and process variation; conduct root-cause analysis and implement sustainable corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support product model changeovers by identifying required equipment modifications, changing tooling and settings, validating filling conditions, and confirming readiness for mass production.
  • Support notching and stacking equipment setup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimization when required by the assigned project.
  • Provide rapid on-site technical support during new plant launches, production ramp-ups, major equipment failures, quality incidents, and other critical manufacturing events.
  • Review mechanical drawings, pneumatic diagrams, equipment layouts, technical specifications, and operating manuals to diagnose problems and recommend equipment improvements.
  • Recommend and implement mechanical, pneumatic, sealing, and process improvements to increase filling accuracy, equipment reliability, production yield, and throughput.
  • Coordinate technical activities with manufacturing, maintenance, quality, process engineering, equipment suppliers, contractors, and engineering teams across multiple entities and locations.
  • Document equipment settings, filling parameters, inspection results, troubleshooting findings, corrective actions, lessons learned, and standardized maintenance procedures.
  • Train locally hired engineers, technicians, operators, and maintenance personnel on filling-equipment operation, Hibar pump maintenance, nozzle calibration, vacuum-system inspection, and troubleshooting methods.
  • Travel frequently to manufacturing facilities throughout North America based on project and operational requirements.


Required Skills:

  • Advanced hands-on knowledge of lithium-ion battery electrolyte filling equipment installation, commissioning, startup, and production stabilization.
  • Specialized knowledge of high-volume electrolyte filling processes requiring precise and consistent electrolyte-volume control.
  • Advanced troubleshooting capability involving electrolyte filling pumps, nozzles, piping, valves, vacuum chambers, seals, sensors, actuators, and pneumatic systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and correct electrolyte-volume hunting, filling variation, and inconsistent dispensing conditions.
  • Advanced knowledge of Hibar pump inspection, setup, maintenance, repair, and performance optimization.
  • Experience with filling-nozzle calibration, maintenance, cleaning, alignment, and replacement.
  • Ability to detect and resolve vacuum chamber leaks, sealing failures, and pressure-performance issues.
  • Strong mechanical and pneumatic troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, corrective-action, and continuous-improvement capabilities.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, pneumatic diagrams, equipment layouts, technical specifications, and operating manuals.
  • Working proficiency with Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, or comparable mechanical design software.
  • Knowledge of notching and stacking equipment setup and troubleshooting.
  • Strong technical documentation, project coordination, and hands-on training skills.
  • Ability to transfer specialized equipment knowledge to local engineers, technicians, operators, and maintenance personnel.
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple manufacturing sites, corporate entities, cultures, and technical functions.

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with technical education or training in automotive maintenance, mechanical systems, manufacturing technology, industrial equipment, or a related discipline required. An associate or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechatronics, or a related field is preferred but may be substituted with substantial directly relevant experience.
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience involving lithium-ion battery manufacturing equipment, electrolyte filling systems, or comparable automated fluid-dispensing and vacuum-processing equipment.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with equipment installation, commissioning, production startup, model changeover, troubleshooting, and stabilization.
  • Demonstrated experience with electrolyte filling pumps, filling nozzles, vacuum chambers, pneumatic systems, or other precision fluid-delivery equipment.
  • Experience supporting high-volume manufacturing operations and resolving equipment or process problems affecting production quality, yield, or equipment uptime.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing projects at multiple facilities or international locations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English in technical and operational settings.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently throughout North America.
  • Ability to work flexible or extended hours during equipment installation, commissioning, production ramp-up, emergency troubleshooting, and other critical project periods.
