Position Summary:
At Mission Design & Automation, we attribute our success to the strength of our team and our ability to be agile and adaptive to new market demands. To build on this team, we are searching for a Lead Machine Builder. This role will collaborate with Controls/Mechanical Engineers, Project Managers, and other team members to complete machine builds per project specifications while mentoring and training Machine Builders. Lead Machine Builders work closely with Controls and Mechanical Engineers to design and assemble custom automation equipment. The ideal candidate will balance multiple projects, possess high technical aptitude, and have a broad experience in automation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Planning:
  • Develop project plans
  • Understand project budget
  • Adjust team hours based on workload
  • Answer job-related questions
  • Attend design reviews and provide key input on equipment
    • Consider how machines will be built, torn down, and shipped
  • Develop tear-down plan
    • Coordinate with other functions to ensure smooth tear-down process
    • Schedule trucking, skids, fork trucks, and any other special equipment
    • Consider and plan for on-site requirements (training, contractors, tools, etc.) 
  • Attend quote review meetings
    • Share knowledge from lessons learned from previous projects
    • Provide estimated hours for quotes

Execution:
  • Hold yourself and team accountable to project plan
  • Keep project team up to date on project status
  • Monitor and update project whiteboard
    • Assign project tasks and set project goals daily/weekly
    • Assess previous days’ progress
    • Set expectations with team
  • Assist and conduct project whiteboard meetings
  • Adjust team hours based on workload ensuring entire project team has clear understanding of project milestones
  • Be accountable for equipment safety and quality
  • Monitor material due dates
  • Answer job-related questions from various departments
  • Ensure redlines are completed in a timely manner
  • Lead tear-down and installation plans
  • Consider and plan for appropriate on-site requirements (training, contractors, tools, etc.) 
  • Actively give praise to team members that model quality work and exhibit a team player mindset
  • Redirect any misguided team members in a positive way by utilizing a coaching and mentorship approach
  • Encourage Quality Management System (QMS) processes are followed and documented appropriately
    • Ensure team members complete Final Ship Checklist and that it is stored in the correct job folder
    • Ensure team members understand value and importance of processes within our QMS
  • Communicate project status updates to Team Lead, Project Manager, and Functional Managers
  • Support company culture and proactively address any negative mindsets within the team
  • Ensure clean and organized work area

Mentor and Develop
  • Develop employees’ technical skills
    • Identify team member weaknesses or concerns and help them grow
  • Build relationships with employees and customers
  • Address employee development opportunities with Team Lead and Manager

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent certification (Vocational education preferred)
  • 5 years of experience in machine build or applicable field
  • Experience mentoring, coaching, and training staff
  • Proficient in reading part and assembly drawings
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with focus on safety and quality
  • Ability to maintain steady pace while bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, and climbing into and beneath machines
  • Work as part of a team or independently with direction from manager
  • Experienced in computer skills including Microsoft Office
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. as required
  • Ability to obtain Hi-Lo and Aerial Platform and Overhead Crane License
  • Ability to provide your own hand tools and toolbox
  • Travel minimum 20% may be required domestically and internationally
