The Draftsperson/CADD Operator utilizes Computer Aided Design (CAD) computer system to create, update, and modify maps and civil engineering plans. This position is responsible for leading the development, coordination, quality control, and production of civil engineering drawings and digital design deliverables for Federal, State, County, utility, and private-sector projects. The CADD Drafter functions as one of the department’s technical CADD leaders and is expected to mentor junior staff, support implementation of CAD standards, coordinate multidisciplinary drawing production, and assist in management of CAD technologies, workflows, and quality programs. 

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree or completion of a technical trade school in CAD, drafting, or related field plus 3 years of related work experience.
  • Any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • CAD drafting principles, practices, methods, and techniques. Manual drafting skills preferred but not required.
  • Able to follow project CAD standards and procedures.
  • Ability to modify existing drawings to minimize the need to create new drawings and create new drawings when necessary, in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to read blueprints and understand general civil engineering principles.
  • Proficiency in both oral and written communication.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings and maps.
  • Prepare accurate detailed drawings from data supplied by field surveys, record drawings, as-built drawings, mark-ups, worksheets, and design sketches.
  • Ability to research land and property information using publicly available resources, including tax maps, GIS databases, zoning maps, recorded plats, and government agency records, for incorporation into engineering plans, maps, and exhibits.
  • Understanding graphic standards, drafting conventions, and readability requirements to produce clear, professional, and presentation-quality plans, maps, figures, and exhibits.
  • Must be able to self-check own work to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, be a self-starter, and be detail oriented.
  • Able to contribute to design reviews and improve job efficiencies.
  • Operate computer using standard drafting software packages and plotters.
  • Experience with BIM software, such as Civil 3D and Revit.
  • Knowledgeable of GIS.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365 i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams.
  • Experience with using SharePoint.
  • Experience with managing and editing PDF files in Revu Bluebeam and Studio.
  • Develop CAD and manual drawings for civil engineering projects.
  • Maintain complete, readily accessible files and records.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and ability to work with outside consultants and vendors.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing, and over the telephone.
  • Occasionally requires bending and lifting/transporting of moderately heavy objects; up to 30lbs.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, power tools, and to handle other computer components.
  • General vision, hearing, speech, walking, and standing are required. Turning, twisting, kneeling, and bending will be performed.
  • Requires alertness to respond to audio and visual cues from the environment, including computers, calculators, telephone systems, and other staff members.
  • Logic and reasoning to understand business needs and goals.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, projects, and schedules.
  • Ability to respond quickly to rush projects, multiple deadlines, or emergencies.





ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Work with CAD equipment and software creating, modifying, and finalizing civil engineering drawings for construction projects and design reports. Drawings for civil engineering projects include but are not limited to those for highways, roadways, pipelines, drainage and flood control projects, fence lines, retaining walls, and water and wastewater facilities and systems. Drawings include plans, profiles, cross-sections, and details.
  • Use AutoCAD software to draw, modify, and plot maps, diagrams, and profiles, using cross-sections and surveys to represent elevations, topographical contours, subsurface formations, and structures.
  • Correlate, interpret, and modify data obtained from topographical surveys and aerial imagery, such as accurate translation and rotation of land survey data.
  • Work directly with engineering team; takes direction to generate two- and three-dimensional models and drawings using AutoCAD software.
  • Work from drawings, sketches or scanned images, customer drawings, or government drawings or specifications.
  • Prepare final drawings and check dimensions and consistency of information between drawings for completeness.
  • Incorporate subdivision plats and drawing files into maps.
  • Research and compile land ownership, parcel, easement, right-of-way, zoning, and other property-related information from publicly available sources for use in engineering plans, permit applications, reports, and exhibits.
  • Prepare plans, maps, figures, and exhibits that adhere to company drafting standards and industry best practices for clarity, consistency, and readability.
  • Evaluate drawings, exhibits, and presentation materials to ensure graphical accuracy, proper annotation, and effective communication of technical information.
  • Copy or scan project drawings.
  • Modify plans using manual drafting techniques.
  • Sketch rough layout and compute angles, surface areas, dimensions, radii, clearances, tolerances, and other information needed for roadway and pipeline layouts.
  • Utilize knowledge of various software, engineering practices, mathematics, building materials, and other physical sciences to complete drawings.
  • Draft finished designs from sketches.
  • Conform to the established filing system for production drawings.
  • Use the accepted drawing standards as guidelines.
  • Work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment of drafters, designers, and engineers. 
  • May assist in developing survey maps and layouts, or update drafting manual and engineering standards when necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SALARY RANGE: $81,844 – $114,824 per year depending on experience
