Title: Visiting Assistant Professor of Interior Design

9-Month Faculty Appointment (21 workload credits per academic year)

  1. Position Summary

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the Interior Design program at Chaminade University of Honolulu. As a faculty member, the Assistant Professor is expected to coordinate and collaborate with the Department Chair, actively participate in curriculum development and assessment, accreditation, and student-related activities, perform all duties professionally and ethically, and support the policies and mission of the University.

Direct Report to: Dean of the College of Business, Innovation, and Technology 


  1. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach the required workload credits per semester in the Graduate or undergraduate programs 
  • Actively participate in division and university-related activities and committees, the accreditation process, curriculum development, and scholarship (teaching, grant writing, research, publishing, and community service)
  • Advise students 
  • Adhere to duties as described in the Faculty Handbook
  • Develop a professional development plan and demonstrate a trajectory that promotes scholarship, community service, and life-long learning
  • Remain current in the latest industry practices, standards, equipment, research, and technology

  1. Education and Experience

 

Minimum 

  • Terminal Degree (Master's degree) in Interior Design, Architecture and Design, Interior Architecture, or a closely related field.

 

Preferred 


  • Ph.D. or Doctorate in Interior Design, Architecture, or a related field


  1. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 
  • Excellent record of teaching in a variety of formats, including in-person, online, and hybrid modalities
  • Demonstrated potential for scholarly research and publication 
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Established design portfolio, excellent teaching skills, and a successful research agenda
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • At least five years of experience teaching in a university or college setting 
  • Experience developing online and hybrid Interior Design courses and curriculum
  • Experience in Interior Design research, studio teaching, and/or professional practice
  • Experience teaching and working with Hawai‘i and Pacific Island communities.
  • Experience with professional program accreditation (CIDA) 
  • NCIDQ certification or willingness to sit for the exam 
  • Membership in at least one of the following organizations: IDEC, IIDA, or ASID.

 

  1. Physical Requirements

Duties involve light work in an office and community setting and require a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking inclines. Must be able to lift 20 pounds, walk the campus with ease, and have excellent motor skills. Must have finger dexterity. Must be able to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand.

 

  1. Other Requirements: 
  • This is a full-time, exempt position. Forty hours per week (M-F) will be the general rule. However, depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required. Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends, and a varying schedule
  • Performs similar, comparable, or related duties as may be assigned or required
  • Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner
