Facilities Maintenance Technician
Location: Greater Birmingham Humane Society (All Facilities)
Employment Type: Full-Time | Non-Exempt

The Facilities Maintenance Technician helps maintain GBHS facilities, equipment, and infrastructure to ensure safe, clean, and efficient operations across multiple locations. This position performs preventive maintenance, repairs building systems, coordinates with vendors, transports supplies between facilities, and assists with facility improvement projects under the direction of the Facilities Manager.
PRIMARY RELATIONSHIPS
- Reports to the Facilities Manager
- Interacts daily with staff, volunteers, vendors, contractors, and the general public at all GBHS facilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Perform routine inspections of buildings, equipment, and facility systems to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns.
- Complete general maintenance and repair work, including painting, carpentry, drywall, ceiling tile replacement, flooring repairs, roofing repairs, and minor renovations.
- Diagnose and perform basic plumbing repairs, including fixtures, drains, leaks, and water lines.
- Diagnose and perform basic electrical repairs, including lighting, switches, outlets, ballasts, and related components.
- Inspect mechanical, plumbing, electrical, HVAC support systems, and CCTV equipment; promptly report significant issues requiring specialized repair.
- Perform preventive maintenance to help extend the life of building systems and equipment.
- Complete scheduled and unscheduled work orders accurately and in a timely manner.
- Coordinate with vendors and contractors performing work on GBHS property and communicate project status to the Facilities Manager.
- Assist with receiving, transporting, organizing, and delivering supplies, equipment, furniture, and donations between GBHS facilities.
- Assist with warehouse organization, inventory movement, and supply staging.
- Operate pallet jacks, hand trucks, and other material-handling equipment safely; operate forklifts if certified.
- Assist in preparing and maintaining maintenance records, supply inventories, and purchasing requests.
- Assist with daily animal transport between GBHS facilities
- Follow all safety procedures, maintain clean work areas, and comply with organizational policies.
- Respond to facility emergencies and participate in after-hours or weekend support as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two years of facility maintenance, building maintenance, construction, or related experience.
- Working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general building maintenance.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, ladders, and maintenance equipment.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to successfully complete criminal background and motor vehicle record checks.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred
- Experience maintaining commercial or nonprofit facilities.
- Experience with work order or maintenance management systems.
- Forklift certification or ability to obtain certification.
- Experience operating box trucks, trailers, or other commercial vehicles.
- OSHA or maintenance-related certifications.
Physical Requirements
This is a very physically active position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, reaching, and lifting or moving materials and equipment. The employee must be able to regularly lift up to 50 pounds and up to 75 pounds with assistance or reasonable accommodation. The ability to safely operate hand and power tools and perform physical tasks in a timely manner is required. Must meet minimum general requirements for GBHS employment as set forth in the GBHS employee handbook.
Work Environment
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors across multiple GBHS facilities and may require evening, weekend, or emergency response as needed. The work environment includes exposure to varying weather conditions, maintenance equipment, cleaning chemicals, dust, loud noise, uneven surfaces, and construction materials. Employees will work around animals and may be exposed to animal dander, odors, allergens, zoonotic diseases, bites, or scratches while performing facility maintenance and transportation duties. Compliance with all GBHS safety procedures and policies is required. Must be able to work with and around animals of all types, including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and other species. Exposure to animal dander, parasites, infectious diseases, odors, and humane euthanasia procedures may occur as part of the work environment.
