Shipping Material Handler / Crane Operator

We're looking for a dependable, safety-focused Receiving Material Handler to join our operations team. This position plays a critical role in ensuring incoming steel is safely unloaded, accurately received, inspected, and staged for production.

Position Summary

The Shipping Material Handler is responsible for safely loading outbound steel shipments, staging material for shipment, and maintaining accurate inventory records. This role works closely with production, quality, receiving, and warehouse personnel to ensure materials are received accurately and efficiently while maintaining a safe work environment.

Primary Responsibilities

Safely load outbound steel coils using overhead cranes and other material handling equipment.
Perform daily inspections of cranes, lifting devices, and equipment before use, documenting and reporting any maintenance or safety concerns.
Verify incoming shipments against purchase orders and packing slips.
Accurately log materials and the status of shipments using the company systems.
Empty scrap hoppers and record scrap weights.
Assist receiving and machine operators during periods of high production or as business needs require.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe receiving area.
Identify opportunities to improve receiving processes, safety, and operational efficiency.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum of two years of experience in receiving, warehousing, manufacturing, steel processing, or a related industrial environment.
Experience operating overhead cranes is preferred.
Forklift experience is a plus.
Knowledge of safe rigging and material handling practices.
Ability to safely move large, heavy, and irregularly shaped steel products.
Basic computer skills and experience in maintaining inventory records.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including material weights and quantities.
Strong attention to detail with a commitment to safety, quality, and inventory accuracy.
Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs independently on a routine basis and handle materials safely as part of daily job duties.
Ability to stand for extended periods and maintain safe body positioning while performing tasks and moving through the work area, including walking on concrete floors and uneven surfaces.
Frequent squatting, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting, requiring full-body mobility, balance, and upper- and lower-body strength to perform work safely.
Manual agility to operate tools safely and effectively, with regular use of arms, shoulders, and back for lifting, reaching, and positioning tasks.
Ability to work safely in a warehouse environment with exposure to noise, dust, moving equipment, and varying temperatures.
Maintain adequate visual and auditory acuity to safely perform assigned tasks, including but not limited to: identifying potential hazards, reading and/or recording measurements, inspecting materials, and responding promptly to verbal instructions, alarms or hand signals in the work environment
