Materials Engineer

Salamander Solutions is seeking a Materials Engineer with a focus on metallurgy to support the development, testing, and improvement of components used in our heater cable equipment and oilfield completions technologies. This position plays a critical role in material selection, process optimization, and failure analysis to ensure product performance in demanding oil and gas environments. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical knowledge of metallurgy, heat treatment, corrosion, and materials science, with proven experience in oilfield applications or similar industrial settings.


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Select, test, and qualify metals and alloys for use in high-performance heater cables and completions equipment
  • Conduct failure analysis and metallurgical investigations on returned or failed field equipment to identify root causes and recommend design or process changes
  • Collaborate with engineering and design teams to ensure material choices align with application requirements (e.g., temperature, pressure, corrosion)
  • Develop and optimize heat treatment, welding, and surface treatment processes to improve product durability and performance
  • Support Manufacturing with metallurgical expertise in areas such as weldability, machinability, and materials conformity
  • Evaluate suppliers and incoming materials for compliance with specifications, standards, and quality requirements
  • Design and execute metallurgical tests, including mechanical property testing, microstructural analysis, and corrosion testing
  • Document test procedures, results, and recommendations in clear technical reports for internal and customer use
  • Keep up to date with industry standards, codes, and best practices relevant to metallurgy in the oil and gas sector
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior engineers and cross-functional teams as needed


Minimum Qualifications:

  • 8 to 10 years of experience in metallurgy or materials engineering, preferably in the oil and gas or heavy industrial sectors

Core Competencies:

  • Strong understanding of metals and alloys used in high-temperature, high-pressure, and corrosive environments
  • Experience with metallurgical testing methods, including tensile, hardness, impact, and microstructure analysis
  • Proficiency in interpreting phase diagrams, material specifications, and industry codes such as ASTM, ASME, and NACE
  • Familiarity with welding metallurgy, heat treatment processes, and non-destructive testing methods
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to conduct root cause analysis and materials failure investigations
  • Experience with lab equipment such as SEM, optical microscopy, and spectrometry is an asset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex material science concepts to non-specialists
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to work in a high-functioning team environment. Display the highest levels of honesty, integrity, and professionalism
