The Safety Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving CMC Development & Construction's corporate safety program to ensure a safe and healthy work environment for employees, trade partners, clients, and visitors. This position provides strategic leadership for all aspects of environmental health and safety (EHS), OSHA compliance, risk management, safety training, incident prevention, and continuous improvement across all company operations.



The Safety Director leads the Safety Department, establishes company-wide safety standards, and partners with Operations to promote a proactive safety culture that supports operational excellence.

The Safety Director is responsible for ensuring that safety is integrated into every phase of project planning and execution while supporting CMC's commitment.


Responsibilities include:

Safety Leadership

  • Develop, implement, and maintain CMC's corporate safety program and policies.
  • Establish annual safety goals, initiatives, and performance metrics.
  • Foster a culture where safety is a core company value and shared responsibility.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and accountability for all safety personnel.
  • Promote continuous improvement through proactive hazard identification and risk reduction.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Maintain company safety manuals, policies, and standard operating procedures.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and update company programs accordingly.
  • Support compliance with owner-specific safety requirements and project safety plans.
  • Coordinate regulatory inspections and audits.

Risk Management

  • Identify, evaluate, and mitigate workplace hazards.
  • Lead Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) initiatives.
  • Review project-specific safety plans prior to construction.
  • Partner with Operations to develop mitigation strategies for high-risk activities.
  • Assist with insurance audits and risk assessments.

Incident Management

  • Direct investigations of incidents, near misses, property damage, and safety concerns.
  • Determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Monitor incident trends and develop preventive measures.
  • Maintain required OSHA logs and reporting documentation.
  • Coordinate return-to-work efforts in collaboration with Human Resources.

Safety Training & Development

  • Develop and oversee company safety orientation programs.
  • Ensure all employees receive required safety training and certifications.
  • Conduct leadership safety training for Project Managers, Superintendents, and field personnel.
  • Oversee toolbox talks, safety stand-downs, and ongoing education initiatives.
  • Maintain employee training records and compliance documentation.

Field Operations Support

  • Conduct regular project site visits and safety audits.
  • Support project teams in implementing project-specific safety plans.
  • Provide guidance on corrective actions and best practices.
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings and preconstruction planning for high-risk work.
  • Assist Operations with schedule planning for critical safety activities.

Safety Performance & Analytics

  • Monitor company safety metrics and key performance indicators.
  • Analyze trends related to incidents, inspections, audits, and corrective actions.
  • Prepare monthly safety reports for Executive Leadership.
  • Utilize business intelligence tools to support data-driven safety decisions.
  • Recommend improvements based on performance analytics.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Partner with Operations, Compliance, Human Resources, and Executive Leadership to support company initiatives.
  • Participate in leadership meetings and strategic planning sessions.
  • Support recruiting by evaluating craft safety qualifications when needed.
  • Represent CMC during owner safety meetings and external safety committees.
  • Build strong working relationships with subcontractors and project partners.


Qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of construction safety experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a safety leadership or management role.
  • Experience managing safety programs for commercial construction projects.
  • Demonstrated success leading multi-project or multi-office safety operations.
  • Experience with public sector, healthcare, education, municipal, and commercial projects preferred.

Certifications

  • Required:
    • OSHA 500 or ability to obtain
    • OSHA 30-Hour Construction
    • CPR / First Aid Certification
  • Preferred:
    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
    • Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST)
