Smith Pump Company | Municipal Water & Wastewater | Greater Houston and surrounding counties
Smith Pump Company is hiring a Sales Engineer to own and grow our Southeast Texas territory. We’re a Texas institution in the municipal water and wastewater pump market – family-owned, well-respected, and growing. We’ve built our name over 60 years on technical expertise and service, and now we’re looking for someone to go take market share in the greater Houston area and the surrounding counties.
This is an ownership role. You’ll take a territory with an established Smith Pump reputation and an installed base already in the ground, and grow it – deepening the accounts we serve today, and opening the utility districts, municipalities, and public water systems we don’t. The pump repair and service work is out there every day. We need someone who knows this equipment, knows how districts buy, and stays in front of the customer until the order is won.
What you’ll be doing
- Owning the Houston territory – greater Houston plus the surrounding counties, from Colorado and Wharton in the west to Orange and Jefferson in the east
- Growing existing accounts — staying in front of the operators and district managers who know Smith Pump, and capturing the repair and replacement work we're missing
- Prospecting new accounts among utility districts, municipalities, and public water and wastewater systems
- Selling pump repair, maintenance, and field service alongside new equipment, parts, and packaged systems
- Calling on consulting engineers to get our equipment specified before a project goes to bid
- Partnering with our Applications Engineers, shop, and field service team to quote, win, and deliver
- Managing your own schedule, pipeline, and results
You’re competitive by nature. You take care of the customers you have and you go find the ones you don’t. You’re comfortable walking into a utility district, asking the right questions, and staying in front of a customer until the timing is right. You can hold a technical conversation without having a cheat sheet.
Required
- Five or more years in outside sales, business development, or technical service
- Either hands-on pump experience – sales, service, or application of pumps or industrial rotating equipment – or established relationships in the Texas municipal water and wastewater market. Both is better.
- Mechanical and technical aptitude sufficient to discuss pump application, repair scope, and basic specifications with confidence
- Ability to manage your own territory and schedule with minimal oversight
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Valid Texas driver’s license and an acceptable driving record
- Direct experience with vertical turbine, submersible solids handling, and horizontal split case pumps
- Familiarity with how MUDs, WCIDs, and municipalities budget, bid, and release work
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent work experience
Pump repair, field service, and preventive maintenance out of our own shop, plus new equipment from the lines we represent – including Flowserve, Liberty, Tsurumi, Zoeller, Wolf, and Danfoss – and pump bases, suction barrels, etc. manufactured by Smith Pump.
What we offer
- Competitive base salary + commission with uncapped earning potential in a territory that has room to run
- Company vehicle
- Health, dental, disability, and retirement benefits
- Real support behind you: a Senior Branch Manager, a Director of Sales, two Applications Engineers, a shop mechanic, and a field service technician
- Autonomy to build your book the way you see fit
- A family-owned company where decisions get made quickly and the people you work with know your name
