Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement and maintain programs and processes to prevent workplace accidents in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.  Ensure that employees and on-site visitors, vendors and contractors understand and conform to all HSE requirements governing the site. 

  • Conduct audits, inspections and process hazard assessments (PHA) and risk assessments to ensure organizational compliance with applicable laws, regulations and international/corporate standards.  Drive the implementation of actions to eliminate or mitigate hazards where possible.  Document and report findings internally and externally as required. 

  • Create and deliver health & safety training programs educating employees on topics including, but not limited to, safe working practices, appropriate equipment operation and emergency procedures.  Maintain necessary training records to document compliance with legal and other requirements. Support the training program for hazardous waste management at the facility. 

  • Facilitate root cause investigations for all reported HSE events (accidents, near misses, spills, good catches, etc.) and verify implementation of corrective actions to prevent recurrence.  Prepare and submit incident reports in accordance with applicable regulatory and company requirements. 

  • Ensure organizational compliance with the requirements of the ISO 45001 international standard.  Coordinate ISO 45001 management system activities as a part of the company’s combined Quality, Health & Safety, and Environmental (QHSE) management system. 

  • Co-lead the site Crisis Management Team. Lead the emergency response planning process to ensure consideration of HSE requirements in the documented Emergency Response Plan.  Organize, train and lead a cross-functional team of employees (Emergency Response Team) to provide emergency response support in accordance with the documented plan.  

  • Collaborate with Human Resources on local workers’ compensation program by initiating claims with the third party insurance provider and acting as the primary contact for all parties involved throughout the claims process. 

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of federal, state and other regulatory and standard requirements pertaining to occupational health & safety.  Examples include, but are not limited to:  Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA/MiOSHA), Process Safety Management standard, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), American National Standards Institute (ANSI) , Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (ISO 45001) 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Health & Safety related field is strongly preferred.  Equivalent work experience with current professional certification(s) may be considered. 

  • 8+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment, chemical manufacturing is preferred. 

  • 5+ years of experience in a HSE role. 

  • Experience with Process Safety Management and Process Hazard Analysis assessments strongly preferred 

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) preferred
