Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Clinical Care Team

Position Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct patient care and clinical support under the supervision of a physician or Advanced Practice Provider (APP) within Village Heart & Vein. The LPN works as an integral member of the provider care team to deliver high-quality, compassionate cardiovascular care while supporting efficient patient flow, clinical documentation, patient education, and care coordination.

This position functions similarly to a Certified Medical Assistant but utilizes the additional education and licensure of an LPN to perform nursing functions permitted under Florida law and Village Heart & Vein policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Prepare patients for examination and treatment.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, height, weight, medication lists, allergies, and chief complaints.
  • Perform focused patient assessments within the LPN scope of practice.
  • Assist physicians and APPs during examinations and office procedures.
  • Prepare exam rooms and procedure rooms.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA.

Clinical Support

  • Administer medications and injections as ordered by the provider and within Florida scope of practice.
  • Perform EKGs and other ordered diagnostic testing.
  • Assist with stress testing and other cardiovascular diagnostic procedures as trained.
  • Perform venipuncture and specimen collection.
  • Prepare laboratory specimens for processing.
  • Perform dressing changes and wound care as directed.
  • Remove sutures or staples when ordered and trained.
  • Assist with IV starts if permitted by licensure, training, and organizational policy.
  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain clinical equipment.

Patient Education

  • Reinforce provider instructions regarding medications, procedures, and treatment plans.
  • Provide patient education using approved educational materials.
  • Answer routine clinical questions within scope and refer complex concerns to the provider or RN.
  • Review pre-procedure and post-procedure instructions with patients.

Care Coordination

  • Coordinate referrals, diagnostic testing, and follow-up appointments.
  • Assist with prior authorizations and clinical documentation when appropriate.
  • Monitor provider task lists and assist with completion of clinical workflows.
  • Communicate patient concerns promptly to the provider.

Documentation

  • Document patient care accurately within the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Record administered medications and treatments.
  • Maintain accurate nursing documentation in accordance with regulatory standards.

Infection Prevention & Safety

  • Follow OSHA, CDC, and infection control guidelines.
  • Maintain clean and safe patient care areas.
  • Properly dispose of biohazardous materials.
  • Participate in emergency response activities as assigned.

Team Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with physicians, APPs, RNs, medical assistants, and administrative staff.
  • Assist with training new clinical employees.
  • Support practice quality improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited Practical Nursing program.

Licensure

  • Current Florida Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in good standing.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • ACLS preferred.

Experience

  • One year of clinical nursing experience preferred.
  • Cardiology or internal medicine experience preferred.
  • Experience with electronic medical records preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of cardiovascular terminology and common cardiac conditions.
  • Excellent patient communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with providers.
  • Proficient computer and EMR skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to assist patients with mobility when necessary.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform clinical procedures.

Work Environment

  • Outpatient cardiology practice.
  • Frequent interaction with patients, providers, and multidisciplinary staff.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other clinical hazards; appropriate PPE is required.
