Position Summary: Under general supervision, the part-time Building Maintenance Technician I performs routine maintenance, repair, and alteration of City buildings, facilities, and fixtures. Work includes carpentry, plumbing, heating/air conditioning, electrical, painting and mechanical repair tasks within City limits.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Regular and timely attendance at work.
  • Operates City vehicles and other equipment as needed.
  • Maintains and repairs City facilities, equipment, and buildings by performing a variety of carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, and mechanical repair work.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of mechanical tools and equipment such as power saws, power sanders, drills, air compressors, paint sprayers, sewer augers, and various hand tools required for maintenance tasks.
  • Inspects facilities to identify building maintenance needs; performs repair and maintenance of wood structures.
  • Moves furniture and equipment; assembles prefabricated furniture.
  • Adheres to departmental, personnel, and safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic hand tools.
  • Knowledge of and ability to safely operate drills, buffers, grinders, power saws, and other power tools.
  • Knowledge of applying paints, chemicals, lubricants, and other materials used in maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of basic safety practices to be observed in building maintenance activities.
  • Ability to perform basic building maintenance, construction, and repair duties.
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse environment and in extreme situations.
  • Ability to follow instructions, safety practices, and standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly.
  • Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.


Minimum Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Six (6) months of experience in a facilities maintenance or related field.
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation(incuding Criminal Justice Information Services(CJIS)), physical, and drug screen.


Essential Position:

  • This is a position that is not essential to the provision of emergency services during and/or following a disaster.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions: Must be able to exercise good judgment; make competent decisions; handle multiple projects; meet deadlines; and work well under time constraints, pressure, and stress. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation, including the ability to talk, read, see, walk, and hear; operate tools and maintenance equipment; follow oral and written directives; perform strenuous physical tasks to include exerting up to 50 lbs of force, lifting heavy objects, shoveling, crawling, bending, kneeling, and climbing on and off equipment. Must have good hand/foot/eye coordination to operate equipment; able to lift up to 50 lbs several times a day; work indoors and outdoors, in confined spaces, on ladders, and under noisy conditions; work in adverse environmental conditions including rain, sleet, snow, heat, sun exposure, dust/mist, and hazardous conditions such as street traffic; and be exposed to paints and chemicals. Must maintain an effective and pleasant working relationship with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
