Overview

The Assistant Chef at Camp Loyaltown supports the Executive Chef in all aspects of kitchen operations within a large residential summer camp serving children and adults with developmental disabilities. Campers range in age from 6 to over 80 and have a wide variety of support needs, from full assistance with daily living to simple verbal guidance. The Assistant Chef helps prepare meals for large groups, carries out meal‑related tasks assigned by the Executive Chef, maintains a clean and safe kitchen environment, and works alongside and supervises kitchen staff during meal service to ensure efficient meal setup, service, and cleanup. Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Practices and promotes the agencies mission statements in every interaction                                                                                                                                       Through family and community engagement, Citizens supports

  • Follows all regulations, agency policies and procedures, the employee handbook, and all required agency and program trainings.

 

  • Serves as a mandated reporter and contacts the Justice Center when there is reasonable cause to suspect abuse or neglect, while adhering to all agency incident reporting policies and procedures.

 

  • Works collaboratively with the Executive Chef to manage and support kitchen and dining hall staff.

 

  • Leads daily meetings and provides consistent leadership, guidance, and direction to all kitchen and dining hall staff.

 

  • Instructs, trains, and oversees kitchen and dining hall staff to ensure efficient and safe operations.

 

  • Assumes Executive Chef responsibilities on their scheduled day off.

 

  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

 

Core Kitchen Operations Responsibilities

  • Prepares three daily meals and performs all associated food preparation tasks, including support for special events such as cultural food nights, barbecues, and staff food activities.

 

  • Ensures proper cleaning and sanitation of the kitchen and dining areas, including dishwashing, pot washing, mopping, and maintaining overall cleanliness after each meal.

 

  • Receives, organizes, and stores food and supply deliveries, and assists with periodic inventory of utensils, dishes, cups, pitchers, and related items.

 

  • Supports meal service on busing days (Sundays, 6:30–8:00 AM) and participates in regular breakfast service at 9:00 AM for those remaining on campgrounds.

 

  • Prepares beverages, including coffee for breakfast and dinner service.

Qualifications

Previous professional kitchen experience, including food preparation, basic cooking skills, and routine kitchen maintenance in a fast‑paced environment.

 

Physical Demands

Standing for extended periods during meal preparation and service.

 

Walking, bending, reaching, and moving throughout the kitchen and dining areas.

 

Lifting, carrying, or moving kitchen items such as food supplies, pots, pans, and equipment (typically up to 25–50 pounds).

 

Handling hot equipment, sharp utensils, and commercial kitchen tools safely.

 

Working in a fast‑paced environment with varying temperatures, including hot kitchen areas and cold storage spaces.

 

Performing repetitive motions such as chopping, stirring, washing, and cleaning.

 

Communicating effectively with staff in a busy, sometimes noisy environment
