Cabell Huntington Hospital seeks a full-time, as needed Laboratory Support Clerk II.

The purpose of this position is to enter orders and collect specimens on patients at remote collection centers.  To prepare specimens to be sent to the main Laboratory.

 

Job specific accountabilities (full-list available in job description):

    • Receives all walk up patients, interprets physicians' orders. Enters data into the LIS system to generate requests.

     

    • Creates orders for these specimens, properly places the labels on the blood tubes and prepares samples for delivery to main laboratory. Must be familiar with the proper packaging, specimen requirements, sample preparation.

     

    • Knows Medical Terminology so incumbent can properly pronounce laboratory tests.

     

    • Positively identifies patient prior to drawing blood or collecting any specimens

                   

    • Properly collects and label patient specimens which includes blood, urine, cultures and other body fluids.

     

    • Distributes completed laboratory reports to clinic offices as necessary.

     

    • Delivers supplies to clinic offices, picks up any clinic collected samples for processing as necessary.

     

    • Receives all incoming calls for the remote drawing station, assists the caller as appropriate or transfers these calls to the correct section or person.

     

    • Is familiar with the use of the laboratory computer programs required for the entry of orders, receipt of specimens and query for results.

     

    • Is proficient in the use of the HIS specimen registration process to establish patient accounts as necessary.

     

    • Is proficient in the use of the telephone, pneumatic tube, photocopier, fax machine, centrifuge. Does simple maintenance on label and laser printers.

     

    • Is Responsible for the collection of money for outpatient pregnancy testing as necessary.

     

    • Cleans and stocks the collection area.

     

    • Instructs out patients on the proper collection procedures for a variety of laboratory tests.

     

    • Follows standards of conduct and procedures of hospital and applicable laws and regulations and reports violations through appropriate chain of command.

     

    • Follows established safety measures. Reports patient safety concerns and hazardous conditions in a timely and appropriate manner.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent with classes in advanced sciences (Chemistry, Physics, and Biology II)
  • Junior College/Technical School (Medical Assistant, Clinical Laboratory Assistant or Multi-skilled laboratory Technician certification)
  • Valid Driver's license, acceptable driving record, dependable mode of transportation, valid registration and insurance
  • Minimum 35 words per minute typing speed, after mistakes removed (testing will take place in Human Resources)
  • 75% score on the Medical Terminology Exam
  • Demonstrated computer skilled in a windows based environment and high degree of communication skills required
  • At minimum, one year of experience assisting pathologists, cytotechnologists and histologists, preparing pap smear slides and monolayer slides to include staining cover slipping and reagent preparation, preparing cases for surgical consultation
