The Millwright position supports our NASA customer on the Marshall Engineering Technicians and Trades Support contract (METTS). The Millwright installs new machines or heavy equipment, and dismantles and installs machines or heavy equipment when changes in the plant layout are required. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit, Union members referred by the applicable union will receive hiring preference as outlined in the applicable CBA.

Summary of duties include but are not limited to: 

• Plan and lay out millwright work based on interpretations of blueprints and specifications.
• Install, dismantle, and relocate machines or heavy equipment.
• Use rigging and hand tools to position and secure equipment safely.
• Perform shop computations for stresses, material strength, and load balance.
• Align and balance machinery to meet operational requirements.
• Select appropriate tools, equipment, and parts for each task.
• Install and maintain power transmission equipment, including drives and reducers.
• Core competencies include machine shop, design drawings, communication, and interpersonal skills. 

Required Minimum Education/Experience/Certifications:  

• In general, the Millwright's work normally requires a rounded training and experience in the trade acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.

Preferred Experience/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/IT Skills/Certifications:

• Must be able to communicate with peers, supervisors and customers
• Must be able to work independently or in a team
• Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions

Work Environment: 

• Environmentally controlled, heated and cooled shop area subject to machinery noise

• Indoor and outdoor working environments. May include test areas, test stands, laboratories, chambers, machine shops, cold and hot weather environments, heights, and confined spaces.  

Physical Environment/Requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation): 

• Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and working in awkward positions to access work areas
• The use of tools associated with the position 
• Lifting up to 40 lbs
• Must use proper PPE for all tasks

 
Other:

• This position may require occasional overtime and may include second or third shift support for 24/7 onsite or on-call support based on customer needs and contract requirements.

•  All positions supporting the METTS III contract are contingent upon successful completion of NASA medical screenings at the beginning of employment and annually thereafter. The need for these screenings is determined based on the outcomes of the Safety, Health, and Environmental Job Assessment Questionnaire.

• Must meet eligibility for a Public Trust background investigation for government issues credentials and IT access/applicants must be able to pass a security background check per Redstone Arsenal/MSFC requirements. You will be required to provide two (2) forms of Federal I9 documents. You will be required to provide a REAL ID compliant identification to gain access to RSA and MSFC. Your name must match on both forms of ID, be original (no copies/digital), and be unexpired.
