The Idyllwild Arts Summer Program provides arts instruction and experiences of the highest caliber to a diverse student population of all ages and abilities.   Idyllwild is a small town located at over 5,000 feet on the western slopes of California’s San Jacinto Mountains. Even though it seems far from the hustle and bustle of city life, the town and campus frequently hosts music festivals, prominent speakers and artists, and community events. Also, it is only two hours by car to Los Angeles and San Diego.   Position Description   Position:  Math Faculty Reports To: Math & Science Department Chair Status: Full-time, Exempt   Job Summary: This position is for a full-time STEM instructor with a strong background in Mathematics education, who will teach up to a full course load (five classes), teach at all grade levels, serve as a mentor and role model to all of their students, and as an advisor to a small group of students. Depending on skills and experience, the candidate could also be considered for the Math Department Assistant Chair position for an additional stipend.   As a member of the Math and Science department, this person will create lesson plans and curricula that meet all academic requirements and standards set for students of Idyllwild Arts Academy, using a wide range of course materials. This person is expected to fully participate in faculty and department meetings, as well as serve in additional ancillary duties as a community member at our boarding Arts high school. The expectation is eagerness for community involvement at all levels and within all disciplines. This is a full-time exempt position. Modest housing may be available to the successful candidate in exchange for residential duty as a dorm parent, independent of academic classes.   Special consideration will be given to candidates with high school teaching experience, a record of success in working with international students, and experience in implementing a self-paced, individuated, ‘one room schoolhouse’ approach through an online platform such as DeltaMath.   Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Teach five sections of Mathematics, with the possibility of instruction occurring at any level from Pre-Algebra to Calculus.  Hold office hours in the classroom during designated periods. Work with student counselors to implement approved student accommodations. Use a wide range of course materials, books, videos, and online resources.  Experience with DeltaMath is preferred.  Communicate effectively and professionally in a timely manner, with colleagues, students, and parents. Maintain a gradebook in the school’s LMS for each class, submit grades and comments on time for progress reports and semester report cards.  Assess and evaluate students' course proficiency through a variety of assignments, exams, and projects. Provide constructive and regular feedback to students and parents regarding progress. Establish and maintain a positive, equitable, and inclusive classroom environment. Effectively manage student behavior and create an atmosphere conducive to learning. Fulfill additional duties as assigned by the Head of School or Department Chair.  Work closely with the Math and Science Department Chair to develop the content of math classes in the department.  Assist with math placement for students, at the direction of the Department Chair. Attend and participate in regular department meetings. Assist with planning and implementation of departmental events. Attend faculty and staff meetings, and participate in committees as assigned. Participate in mandatory training (e.g. CPR) and professional development activities as required by the school. Additional professional development opportunities do exist and may be discussed with the Department Chair.   Serve as an advisor to a small group of students, attending regular meetings with them, attending their performances/shows, communicating with their families, and maintaining an overview of their progress. Fully participate as an enthusiastic member of our boarding arts community, chaperoning field trips and/or on-campus events on occasion. May serve as a club advisor or other ancillary duties.  Assist the Admission staff in the interviewing of prospective students and with recruitment events throughout the year as requested.       QualificationsRequired Education, Skills and Experience: Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, Science, or related fields from an accredited college or university required; Master’s degree or beyond is preferred. Minimum of three years of teaching experience, preferably at the high school level. Strong background and knowledge of Mathematics at all levels. Familiarity with utilizing online Learning Management System(s), such as Google Classrooms, Canvas, etc. Ability to work effectively both with teams and independently, and to generate innovative curriculum. Ability to solve problems diplomatically and work with different constituencies. Experience and interest in creating an interdisciplinary curriculum.   Preferred Qualifications: Background in Computer Science, Engineering, Programming or other STEAM-related field. Experience in teaching an applied math elective such as Statistics, or Science classes.    Experience with living in a boarding community or experience with leading and working with teenage students from around the world.   Personal Qualities/Attributes Respects the guidelines and goals of the Math and Science Department. Keeps a positive attitude.   Other Requirements Ability and desire to work within the Idyllwild community, Riverside County, or commute a reasonable distance, that does not impede on-time arrival during winter months.   Obtain and maintain a valid California Driver’s License, pass a criminal history background check as required by California Education Code Section 44237, and pass a TB questionnaire/test.   Physical Demands/Work Environment Specific vision abilities include close, distant and color vision perception and the ability to adjust eye focus. Reaching with the hands and arms and use of hands to manipulate a computer keyboard and mouse; to use tools in demonstrating and teaching all areas of math or science, is required. Additionally, the incumbent must be able to converse in clear English both written and orally, over a telephone and in person, and be able to make public presentations. Work hours vary and may include days, nights, and weekends. Occasionally, incumbent may be required to lift up to 25 pounds, traverse uneven terrain and climb stairs while moving about campus, bend and stoop, and/or show visitors campus facilities.
