Position Summary
The Senior Mine Engineer is responsible for leading mine planning, design, and optimization activities to support safe, efficient, and cost-effective mining operations. This role plays a key part in short- and long-term planning, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring alignment between operational execution and strategic mine objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and execution of short-term, mid-term, and long-term mine plans
- Design and optimize open pit and/or underground mine layouts, including haul roads, ramps, stopes, and sequencing
- Ensure all mine plans comply with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and environmental guidelines
- Collaborate closely with geology, operations, processing, and maintenance teams to align plans with production targets
- Monitor mine performance and reconcile actual results against plan; identify variances and implement improvements
- Conduct economic evaluations, cost analysis, and productivity assessments
- Oversee drill & blast designs and provide technical guidance to operations teams
- Mentor and supervise junior mine engineers and technical staff
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and life-of-mine planning activities
- Implement and maintain mine planning software and systems
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and operational excellence programs
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related discipline (Master’s degree is an asset)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain in Nevada preferred
- Minimum 10 years of mining experience, with strong exposure to planning and operations
- Experience in open pit, underground, or both (depending on operation)
- Proficiency in mine planning software (e.g., Deswik, Vulcan, MineSight, Surpac)
- Strong understanding of drill & blast, geotechnical considerations, and mine economics
- Knowledge of U.S. mining regulations (MSHA standards)
