Veterinary Anesthesia Technician

IndyVet Emergency & Specialty Hospital | Indianapolis, IN

IndyVet Emergency & Specialty Hospital is looking for an experienced Veterinary Technician to join our anesthesia team. This is an opportunity to work alongside emergency and specialty veterinarians while caring for medically complex patients and developing your skills in veterinary anesthesia, surgery, patient monitoring, and critical care.

What You'll Do

As a Veterinary Anesthesia Technician, you will play an important role in the care of patients before, during, and after anesthesia and surgery. Responsibilities include:

  • Prepare patients for anesthesia and surgical procedures, including venipuncture and IV catheter placement
  • Assist with anesthetic induction, airway management, intubation, maintenance, and recovery
  • Monitor anesthetized patients closely and recognize changes in patient status
  • Calculate and administer anesthetic medications, constant rate infusions (CRIs), and IV fluid additives accurately
  • Provide appropriate pain management and supportive patient care
  • Utilize appropriate patient handling and restraint techniques based on individual patient needs and behavior
  • Assist veterinarians and specialty teams with surgical and diagnostic procedures
  • Maintain accurate anesthesia and patient monitoring records
  • Prepare, maintain, and troubleshoot anesthesia equipment and supplies
  • Communicate changes in patient condition promptly and effectively with veterinarians and the nursing team
  • Follow established anesthesia, patient safety, infection control, and hospital protocols
  • Work collaboratively with emergency, surgery, and specialty teams to provide high-quality patient care

What We're Looking For

  • At least 1 year of veterinary nursing or veterinary technician experience; anesthesia experience is strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of veterinary medicine, anesthesia, sedation, anesthetic medications, and patient monitoring
  • Proficiency with venipuncture and IV catheter placement
  • Comfortable performing medication calculations, including CRIs and IV fluid additives
  • Knowledge of small animal surgery, disease processes, emergency medicine, and specialty medicine
  • Ability to recognize changes in anesthetized patients and respond appropriately
  • Understanding of animal behavior and low-stress patient handling; Fear Free familiarity is a plus
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with veterinarians, specialists, and other veterinary technicians
  • Flexible, adaptable, self-motivated, and comfortable working in a fast-paced emergency and specialty environment

Schedule

This is a full-time position with a Monday–Friday schedule consisting of four 10-hour shifts per week.

The position includes some evening on-call and weekend on-call responsibilities. Specific scheduling and on-call expectations will be discussed during the interview process.

Pay is generally $23 - $25 per hour, DOE.
