Description:

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is an integral member of the multidisciplinary neonatal care team at Riley Children’s Hospital. This role provides advanced pharmaceutical care to critically ill neonates, including premature and medically complex infants, through direct patient care, clinical decision-making, education, and quality improvement initiatives.

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist functions as a subject matter expert in neonatal pharmacotherapy, ensuring safe, effective, and evidence-based medication use while supporting the hospital’s mission of delivering exceptional pediatric care. 

A PGY2 or equivalent experience is required to be considered for this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care to NICU patients, including medication therapy management, dosing optimization, monitoring, and therapeutic recommendations.
  • Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds with neonatologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for neonatal pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, nutrition support, antimicrobial stewardship, and investigational therapies.
  • Identify, prevent, and manage adverse drug events and medication-related problems.
  • Support neonatal emergency responses, including code situations, as appropriate.
  • Provide education, coaching, and skills development for pharmacy residents, pharmacy students, and NICU pharmacists related to neonatal pharmacotherapy, clinical decision‑making, and evidence-based practice.

Requirements:

  • Requires Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor's of Science in Pharmacy prior to 2006.
  • Successful completion of an ASHP accredited PGY2 residency or equivalent experience required.
  • Requires 0-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Requires current Indiana Pharmacist license or eligibility for Indiana licensure as a Pharmacist.
  • Basic Life Support certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required.
  • May require weekend rotations.
