Job Title: Counselor – Behavioral Health (PRN, Flat Rate)
Location: Riley Hospital, Indianapolis, IN  

Position Overview:

The Counselor – Behavioral Health facilitates patient involvement in treatment and education, performing individual, group, and family counseling. This role includes conducting utilization review, discharge planning, and collaborating with the healthcare team to ensure patients receive safe, timely, and effective services. The Counselor serves as a vital resource and point of contact in cases involving abuse, neglect, and domestic violence, and provides specialized mental health assessments and interventions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate patient participation in treatment and education within the milieu of care.

  • Conduct individual, group, and family counseling sessions.

  • Perform utilization review and discharge planning functions.

  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care delivery.

  • Interpret and communicate complex patient and family needs; role model caring practices.

  • Assess psychosocial risk factors, including prior functioning, support systems, reactions to illness, and coping abilities.

  • Counsel patients and families on emotional, social, and financial impacts of illness or disability.

  • Access and mobilize family and community resources to address patient needs.

  • Conduct mental health assessments upon physician referral.

  • Support complex discharge planning through therapeutic interventions.

  • Serve as the primary contact and resource in cases of child abuse/neglect, elder/elderly abuse/neglect, institutional abuse, and domestic violence.

  • Act as liaison between Indiana University Health and local protective teams (APS/CPS).

  • Maintain principles and techniques of crisis intervention and de-escalation.

  • Provide intervention in guardianship, foster care, adoption, and mental health Level II placements.

  • Deliver evidence-based mental health services, including crisis intervention, motivational interviewing, CBT, and DBT.

  • Support individuals in dangerous or potentially dangerous situations with leadership and clinical care.

  • Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment, including instruction on daily activities and programming.

  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with community agencies, law enforcement, schools, probation, and medical teams.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Education: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related mental health field.

  • Experience: 0-3 years of relevant healthcare, mental health, or community-based experience.

  • Licensure:

    • License-eligible in Indiana as an LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, or LCAC.

    • Must have a minimum of a permanent LSW, LMHC-A, or LMFT-A upon hire.

  • Certifications:

    • Crisis intervention certification may be required.

    • BLS certification may be required.

  • Knowledge & Skills:

    • Knowledge of psychosocial assessments, therapeutic counseling, and crisis intervention.

    • Familiarity with evidence-based practices such as CBT, MI, and DBT.

    • Understanding of state and county protective legal mandates.

    • Principles of growth and development across the lifespan, including end-of-life care.

    • Ability to create a safe, therapeutic environment and instruct on daily activities and programming.

    • Proficiency in electronic medical records and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

    • Strong relationship-building skills with community partners and healthcare teams.

Additional Information:

  • Position located at Riley Hospital.

  • PRN (as needed) with a flat rate compensation.

  • May include on-call coverage as needed.
