Position Title: TOOLSETTER

Position Summary: Receives, stores, sets and issues hand tools, machine tools, dies, materials, and other equipment necessary for the machining operation.  Inspects, tests, and adjusts new and reworked tools, dies, gauges, jigs, and fixtures, for conformance to specifications, such as dimensions, tolerances, and hardness, applying knowledge of tool and die design, shop mathematics, and machining and testing procedures, using precision measuring instruments, testing equipment, and hand tools.

Accountabilities: The toolsetter is accountable for maintaining the accuracy, availability, and quality of all tools and equipment required for machining operations. This includes ensuring proper inspection, calibration, and storage, keeping precise inventory records, and supporting production staff by issuing, troubleshooting, and coordinating repairs or replacements

Job Responsibilities:

  • Read tool crib log book at the start of each shift and report problems which occur during shift.
  • Measures angular dimensions, radii, contours, clearances, thread lead, and other specifications, using precision measuring instruments, such as micrometer, gauge blocks, dial indicators, height gauges, level protractors, and optical comparators.
  • Tests units for fit of moving parts and mechanical functioning. 
  • Inspects gauges and measuring instruments for conformance to specifications
  • Determines salvageability of damaged tools, utilizing knowledge of cost of repairs from outside vendors.
  • Check Zoller pre-setter at the beginning of each shift. If necessary, reset (program gage--clear--50 enter--5.9999 enter--1.9998 enter). Always double-check.  Calibrate as necessary.
  • Receive, unpack, and store incoming tools and equipment.
  • May mark and identify tools and equipment, using identification tag, stamp, or electric marking tool.
  • Maintain inventory of tools and equipment using computer.   Aid in computer description for all tooling and supplies.  Issue Bar Codes to tools using bar code scanning equipment. 
  • Distribute tools and equipment to workers and maintain records of tools and equipment issued and returned, or using computer.
  • Sometimes deliver tools or equipment to workers, manually or using hand truck.
  • Sometimes locate lost or misplaced tools and equipment.
  • After perishable tooling has been used, remove from the rotary tool holders, review tooling for resharpening and place in pertinent regrind tubs. Place special tooling in job drawers and place standard tooling in stock.
  • Inspect and measure tools and equipment for defects and wear, visually or using micrometer.
  • Sometimes maintain used carbide insert storage for possible scrap value.
  • Sometimes work with CAD/CAM Programmers to correct tool sheets as necessary.
  • Assist, when necessary, in the daily operation of the tool crib, operating within tool crib standard operating procedures and work instructions.
  • Send tools out for repair to appropriate vendor.
  • Set tools per tool sheets.
  • Set up and operate pre-setter.
  • Maintain familiarity with the location of all tooling in the tool crib.
  • Verify tools (buy off tool carts).
  • Ensure MSDS labels are properly attached and clearly marked prior to distributing bottles and containers.
  • Assist, when necessary, in the daily operation of the tool crib.
  • Distribute weld wire to weld shop personnel at the tool crib door.
  • Work with machinist on the machine to trouble tooling problems.


 Requirements:

Educational Experience – High School Diploma or GED required.  Vocational training, trade school, work experience or apprenticeship with machining background preferred.

 

Experience – Three to six months experience preferred.

 

Physical Demands - The employee is required to:

  • stand, climb, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor
  • exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or
  • exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or
  • lift and carry up to 75 pounds frequently.

Certification Required -

 

Visual Acuity - Near acuity and accommodation are required for reading machine dial gauges, blueprints, and precision measuring instruments used in the inspection of tooling.

 

Hearing Ability –   Accommodations as required for communicating with employees and customers and recognizing sounds associated with machinery.

 

Working Conditions - The employee is subject to:

  • high noise levels from operating machines
  • physical hazards from moving equipment and production components
  • breathing fumes, dust and mist
  • skin exposure to oils and cutting fluids.
