I. Position Description

The Position of Automation/Controls Engineer is essential in maintaining company’s process control infrastructure and supporting SCADA functions such as real-time data acquisition, supervisory controls, load control and special protection schemes and alarms. This position will be responsible for coordinating strategic direction for the facilities in plant automation and will be the primary person responsible for researching, planning, training and execution of activities related to plant automation under the direction of the Maintenance/Engineering Manager. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) HMI (Human Machine Interface) software applications, consisting of graphical screens for real-time data, historical trend screens, alarm banners and alarm summary windows, pop-up windows for set point entry and manual control of equipment, data collection/logging, automatic report generation using latest concepts in software system.
  • Provide technical leadership in investigating, analyzing and proposing solutions to complex technical problems and new concepts requiring advanced engineering expertise in SCADA systems.
  • Investigate problems arising from restrictions or failures, and recommend solutions to improve performance, simplify installation, reduce costs, correct design or material flaws, or comply with changes in system operation requirements.
  • Develop and review plans and schedules of activities required to ensure the timely implementation of integrated SCADA projects.
  • Train engineers and other personnel in the areas of responsibility.
  • Make decisions on assignments for less experienced personnel and aid in their training with little or no direction from management.
  • Confers with other supervisors to coordinate activities of individual departments.
  • Complies with all environmental, health, safety and housekeeping programs.
  • Other duties, as assigned or deemed necessary.

II. Pre-Hire Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in electrical or computer engineering/science or a computer science field with minimum of five years’ experience SCADA systems programming, HMI and PLC controls. Associates degree considered with commensurate work experience.
  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal, are required to interact with various groups to obtain their needs and understand their problems with SCADA applications and systems.
  • Ability to document functional and design changes pertinent to the SCADA applications and determine the proper implementation tasks and schedule.
  • Must have a strong background with industrial communication systems including Ethernet IP, Ethernet TCP/IP, Control Net, Device Net, Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU and Fieldbus structures. Must have experience with the latest industrial wireless protocols.
  • Solid background will be required with various SCADA platforms including Allen Bradley RS View32, Rockwell Factory Talk View, Wonderware, and/or Ignition.
  • Requires extensive experience with ladder logic, structured text, function block diagrams and sequential 
  • function chart editors for program development. 
  • Requires solid experience with SCADA package including graphics development, alarm management, trending and reports.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, maintain, install, configure, and program PC’s and software related to SCADA and PLC, PCS and HMI systems.
  • Develop solutions to complex problems that require a high degree of innovation and ingenuity.
  • Must be highly flexible and adaptable with the ability to manage change. 
  • Will be involved with startup and system troubleshooting in the field. 
  • Travel to plant sites required for ongoing research, design, startup, commissioning, and debug phase of construction.

IV. Physical Requirements & Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to extreme heat. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment.
