Summary

As an OR Surgical Tech, you are crucial in the efficiency and overall success of operations. You will assist the surgical team by acting as the primary scrub tech who handles the instruments, supplies and equipment during surgical procedures, ensuring sterilization at every point of the process.

Hours Per Week: 40, Full-time

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4pm

Required Qualifications

  • Must meet one of the following:

    • Completed a military Surgical Technology program.

    • Qualified under the Grandfathering Clause by providing evidence of employment as a Surgical Technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of at least one year between December 31, 2010, and December 31, 2014.

    • Graduated from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program and obtain/maintain Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) within 12 months of graduation.

    • Qualified under the Hard-to-Fill Clause, requiring graduation from an accredited Surgical Technology program and attainment of NBSTSA CST certification within 24 months of employment.

    • Graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program.

Required Licensure/Certification

  • Candidates must meet the certification requirements applicable to their qualifying pathway:

    • Military Surgical Technology program graduates meet the educational requirement.

    • Graduates of accredited Surgical Technology programs must hold or obtain Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification through the NBSTSA within the required timeframe (12 months of graduation or 24 months of employment under the Hard-to-Fill Clause).

    • Candidates qualifying under the Grandfathering Clause must provide the required documentation of prior experience.

    • Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) with a current New York State license are not required to hold Surgical Technologist certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification at the time of hire.

  • Graduation from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain at least 15 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) annually.

  • Prepare, inspect, and maintain surgical supplies, instrumentation, and equipment to ensure readiness and proper operation for procedures.

  • Establish and maintain a sterile field by opening sterile supplies, assisting with patient draping, and adhering to aseptic techniques throughout surgical procedures.

  • Assist the surgical team by passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon and anticipating procedural needs.

  • Perform sponge and sharps counts with the Registered Nurse before surgery and prior to incision closure to ensure patient safety.

  • Clean, prepare, and organize surgical instruments for sterilization following established protocols.

  • Prepare sterile dressings and assist with the completion of surgical procedures.

  • Support specialty surgical services by ensuring equipment, supplies, and instruments are available as needed.

  • Orient and assist in the training of medical, nursing, and surgical technology students and technicians.

  • Contribute to the development of unit goals, objectives, and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Stock operating rooms and safely handle medications, sharps, and syringes on the sterile field in accordance with organizational policies.

M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.
