What You’ll Do as a Senior Tax Accountant
The Senior Tax Accountant supports clients by delivering accurate, compliant filings and thoughtful planning that reduces risk and uncovers savings opportunities.
Key responsibilities:
- Prepare and review federal, state, and local returns for individuals, partnerships, and corporations
- Perform tax research and planning; develop quarterly estimate strategies and projections
- Review junior staff work, coach on technical issues, and ensure quality control
- Partner with clients to collect/validate documentation, answer questions, and provide clear guidance
- Monitor tax law changes and apply updates to filings and planning approaches
- Assist with notices, audits, and other tax authority inquiries
- Help refine tax workflows and begin developing reviewer-level judgment; build foundational bookkeeping knowledge to stay effective year-round
Required qualifications/skills:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Accounting/Finance; CPA preferred
- 2–4 years accounting/bookkeeping experience; QuickBooks and strong Excel skills
- Solid grasp of journal entries, debits/credits, A/P, A/R, reconciliations, payroll and payroll tax prep
- Detail-driven, deadline-focused, and client-service oriented

A Typical Day
You’ll start the morning prioritizing deadlines and client needs, then move through a mix of 1040/1041 and business filings (1065/1120/1120-S), including NYS/NYC items like PTET, GCT, UBT, and IT-204 LL. As questions come in, you’ll hop on quick calls or send clear follow-ups to keep documents moving and expectations aligned.
Midday often includes planning-focused work—refining quarterly estimates (4/15, 6/15, 9/15, 12/15), modeling outcomes in Excel, and documenting conclusions from targeted research. You’ll also spend time reviewing staff deliverables and leaving actionable notes that improve accuracy and consistency.
Later, you may address a notice, coordinate responses, or tackle advanced scenarios such as asset dispositions, tiered partnerships, foreign tax, or transfers of capital/interest. When tax work slows, you’ll pivot into bookkeeping-related items to stay productive and broaden your toolkit.
