Technicians will be assigned to one area or a limited number of functions. The primary responsibilities of a Lab Technician I are to develop competence in basic lab procedures, workflow, instrument operation and safety protocols. Focus will be on achieving production and turnaround time standards. Work will be performed under close supervision. Examples of duties performed include: washing milk sample vials and preparing them for reuse, preparing samples for testing (sorting, weighing & measuring) and mixing simple chemical solutions. The schedule for this position is Monday to Friday, 2:30pm to 11:00pm EST. Duties Following are examples of typical duties for a Lab Technician I. Specific duties may vary depending on which lab the work is performed in % of total effort Duties 45% Sample preparation Sort, scan, and record incoming samples. Prepare samples for further testing or processing Prepare sample vials for cleaning. Handle/prepare chemicals required for testing or cleaning. 45% Instrument Operation Operate laboratory instruments according to standard operating procedures. Perform start-up & shut-down procedures at the start & end of each shift. Clean equipment as established in lab protocol. 10% Other Duties Maintain cleanliness of work area and overall lab. Assist with instrument upkeep & maintenance as needed. Participate in lab-specific and organizational trainings such as safety & annual anti-harassment, etc. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a laboratory where there is exposure to some chemicals and occasional exposure to noise. The use of protective safety equipment may be required. MENTAL AND VISUAL DEMANDS: Close mental and visual attention required for controlling machines or processes at a rapid pace requiring coordination. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS: Constantly uses hands to finger, handle, or feel; and performs repetitive motions of the hands and/or wrists. Regularly stands, walks, and reaches with arms and/or hands. Occasionally stoops, crouches, and bends. Ability to occasionally lift to 30 pounds. QualificationsHigh School Diploma or GED, and 1 year of prior work experience following specific protocols/instructions.
