Duties and Responsibilities


Gallery staff wear many hats, which changes with rotating exhibitions and varies with assigned shifts. Monitors oversee the daily operations of the gallery including but not limited to attendance, visitor assistance, surveillance and maintenance of artworks and facility, content creation for gallery social media sites, light cleaning, and answering of phone. 

Monitors also assist in the hosting of events, guest speakers, and class visits when scheduled; lifting and arrangement of chairs, communication with visitors, audio/visual set-up, and some light catering. 

Between exhibitions, gallery monitors are able to gain experience with installations and de-installations: art/object handling, working with artists, light construction, tool use, lighting, signage, and wall spackling/painting. If experience and timing coincide, monitors may request to work on research for exhibitions or to work with the college's permanent collection.
 

Qualifications
Seeking responsible, friendly, dedicated, and detail-oriented individuals with good organizational and communication skills. Students with a strong interest in supporting the arts at Ithaca College are encouraged to apply. 

Required skills and experience vary according to position. Students without prior work or volunteer experience in the museum/gallery sector are encouraged to apply- we are willing to train students Without specific job experience who are excited to learn new skills, able to problem solve and work through mistakes, and who are generally curious about whether the field of art production and interpretation is a good fit for job pursuit after graduation.

Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom are preferred but not essential. 

Familiarity with Instagram and Facebook is essential. 

Some hand tool experience is helpful, but can be learned on the job (please list this experience, if relevant, in your resume or cover letter).


Gallery monitors must be able to report to work in-person.
