Advanced Practice Manager (NP/PA/APP) - Critical Care and Hospital Medicine

This is an exciting opportunity to join the leadership team at UVA Health's Center for Advanced Practice (CAP) — the health system's professional home for advanced practice providers (APPs). The APP Manager for Medical ICU and Hospital Medicine is more than a “lead APP” role: it is a front-line leadership position responsible for the day-to-day management, professional development, and practice standards of two high-acuity APP teams.

The successful candidate will bridge clinical expertise with systems-level administration, serving as the primary point of accountability for team performance, recruiting and onboarding, and local practice standards, while representing MICU and Hospital Medicine APP interests in system-level discussions.

This manager will maintain an active clinical practice representing approximately 60–70% of total effort, with the remaining time allocated to management-related responsibilities. This structure ensures the manager remains a credible, front-line clinical leader who understands the realities of the teams they support.

The ideal candidate is an experienced and confident clinician with a genuine desire to support fellow clinicians, deliver — and help others deliver — superlative patient care, pursue ways to enhance the contribution of advanced practice to the clinical mission, and both identify and effect change where gaps exist.

Preferred experience:

 Minimum of 3 years of clinical practice experience as an advanced practice provider (NP or PA).
• Desire to not only identify practice or workflow gaps, but to have an active voice in closing them.
• Genuine motivation to elevate colleagues to success, with a track record of mentoring or developing others.
• Demonstrated history of effective collaboration and partnership across disciplines and levels of leadership.
• Strong patient-focused orientation that grounds day-to-day decision-making.
• Ability to articulate a clear team vision and rally others around it.
• Commitment to maintaining accountability to established standards of practice

LEADERSHIP
• Provide front-line team management for the Medical ICU and Hospital Medicine APP teams, including day-to-day oversight and coaching.
• Partner with medical directors, division administrators, and division chiefs to optimize APP deployment models and the overall professional practice experience.
• Represent MICU and Hospital Medicine APP teams' interests in system-level discussions, committees, and planning forums.
• Identify gaps in practice, workflow, or professional experience and lead efforts to design and implement solutions.
• Build and sustain a team culture grounded in accountability, engagement, and shared purpose.

CLINICAL
• Maintain an active clinical practice representing approximately 60–70% of total effort 
• Establish and maintain local standards for clinical practice consistent with CAP and divisional expectations.
• Support and role-model superlative, evidence-based patient care as a credible front-line clinician.
• Monitor scope-of-practice, credentialing, and competency requirements for team members.

ADMINISTRATIVE
• Manage APP recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding 
• Track and report team-based performance metrics, using data to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Oversee staffing, scheduling, and deployment logistics in coordination with divisional leadership.
• Support compliance with billing, documentation, and regulatory requirements affecting APP practice.

PROFESSIONAL
• Serve as a resource and advocate for APP staff, supporting professional growth and engagement 
• Pursue ways to enhance the contribution of advanced practice to the clinical mission.
• Support fellow clinicians' professional development, mentorship, and career progression.
• Model and promote the professional identity of advanced practice within the broader UVA community.
 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Master’s or Doctorate in Nursing (Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and Certified Nurse Midwife); Master’s or Doctorate in Science (Physician Assistant or Radiologist Assistant)

Experience: 5 years as a Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Certified Nurse Midwife, Radiologist Assistant or Physician Assistant

Licensure: Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia and licensed to practice as a Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or Certified Nurse Midwife in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or licensed to practice as a Physician Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia or licensed to practice as a Radiologist Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification. American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) required for selected clinical practice settings. Other certifications may be required to be obtained after hire depending on the clinical setting

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently walking/bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
