UVA Business Services seeks applications for a Finance & Business Manager / Director of Finance to join our team.  The position will be filled at either the Manager or Director level, commensurate with the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Finance Managers / Directors may focus on one or more specialty areas in finance, including accounting, budget, payroll, financial analysis, purchasing, or treasury. Finance Managers / Directors serve as finance experts, program leaders, or team leads.  They convey institutional and operational knowledge, and expertise, allowing independent work, providing management oversight and direction for their organizations to operate efficiently and effectively, adhering to established compliance guidelines, institutional standards, organizational timelines, and fulfilling leadership goals.

This role plays a pivotal role in supporting the operational functions across the Business Services units with expected primary support for the UVA Bookstore operation, but may also include opportunities across other Business Services units, including Dining, Parking, Print, Mail, Housing and the Cavalier Card Office.

The successful candidate will manage the financial activities and processes including purchasing activities, while ensuring compliance with the University’s established policies to ensure the safeguarding of financial resources in compliance with established University policies.  This position supports the management of the daily financial service operations including revenue billing and collections, vendor invoices and the associated accounts payable and vendor relations, reconciliation of systems and financials, unrelated business income tax and other ad hoc reporting and data mining analyses used to support operational strategic decisions. 

The ideal candidate will have relevant financial and management experience, with proven effective communication skills and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently. 

Core Responsibilities Include

  • Supervise staff and oversee daily services of the business office in compliance with University policies. 
  • Coordinate implementation of financial policies, processes, and operational improvements to enhance performance and efficiency.
  • Support development, analysis and monitoring of the annual budget.
  • Gather, organize, and analyze financial data from a variety of sources to support reporting of past performance, forecasting, and strategic planning, including economic forecasting and pricing proposals for management and the Board of Visitors.
  • Assist with development and review of periodic financial statements, operating results, and cash flow performance to inform decision-making on future investments.
  • Support preparation and presentation for financial analysis and recommendations to management. 
  • Support quarterly operating activity reports for Business Services
  • Reconcile Workday deposits across various systems and locations.
  • Support year end projections for transfers to Reserve accounts and coordinate with Business Services Finance Director to seek required approvals for transfers to Access UVA.
  • Process payroll costing allocations for employees, students, and Federal Work Study employees.
  • Collect and prepare data for Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) reporting.
  • Support and perform data mining, construct database tables, build queries and reports to consolidate required data reporting, work with power pivots, Qlik and other statistical tools to provide accurate reporting for the Business Unit’s needs.
  • Provide interpretation and recommendations of financial activity.
  • Support and mentor staff for growth and success.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Business/Finance Manager

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience: Five years of relevant professional experience
  • Salary range is $65K-$80K, commensurate with background and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in leadership of budget, financial operations, and/or financial reporting, especially in a higher education auxiliary operation setting is preferred.
  • Proven experience working with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation and reporting skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and develop internal and external partnerships.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising, developing, and evaluating staff, including setting performance expectations, managing workloads, providing coaching and feedback.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams) is required.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement processes are preferred.
  • Knowledge of UVA systems, including Workday, Adaptive/Anaplan, UBI (Qlik) or NetSuite is a plus.
  • CMA, CFA, CTP, CPA, or other relevant certifications are a plus.

Director of Finance

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Experience: 6+ years of relevant professional experience to include 2+ years of formal managerial experience required.
  • Salary range is $85K-$100K, commensurate with background and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in leadership of budget, financial operations, and/or financial reporting, especially in a higher education auxiliary operation setting is preferred.
  • Proven experience with leading competing priorities in a high-visibility office.
  • Proven experience working with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience collecting, analyzing, and interpreting complex data to identify trends, inform decision-making, improve operational effectiveness, and develop actionable recommendations for leadership.
  • Proven critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation and reporting skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and develop internal and external partnerships.
  • Proven experience leading and managing teams, including responsibility for hiring, performance management, employee development, workforce planning, and creating an inclusive and accountable culture that supports organizational goals.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams) is required.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement processes are preferred.
  • Knowledge of UVA systems, including Workday, Adaptive/Anaplan, UBI (Qlik) or NetSuite is a plus.
  • CMA, CFA, CTP, CPA, or other relevant certifications are a plus.

About the position:

This is a hybrid position located in Charlottesville, VA, though it is primarily in-person, with the possibility for intermittent remote work.

Compensation:

Manager - $65,000 - $80,000 per year based on education and experience

Director $85,000 - $100,000 per year based on education and experience
