The Patient Care Technician provides direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and plan of care under the direction of area leadership, RN or licensed independent practitioner.

  • Provide safe and direct care to patients in their assigned workĀ locationĀ makingĀ appropriate ageĀ adjustments as needed.Ā Monitor patients’ conditions and provide updates to the health care team.Ā 

  • Provide direct and indirect care to patients with and without medical/surgical complications to meet their comfort, personalĀ hygieneĀ and safety needs.Ā 

  • Provide careĀ in accordance withĀ nursing and medical plans of care andĀ deliverĀ perĀ UVA Health Nursing and Hospital policy and procedure.Ā 

  • Ensure assigned clinical location isĀ maintainedĀ as a safe, clean, stocked environment toĀ facilitateĀ meeting patient needs.Ā 

  • Maintain supplies, educational material, equipment, sterilization of supplies,Ā instrumentsĀ and the environment to promote quality, safe patient care outcomes (as applicable).Ā 

  • Contribute to theĀ patientĀ experience by accuratelyĀ identifyingĀ the patient, byĀ observingĀ safety goals and reporting to a licensed independent practitioner,Ā managerĀ and/or Registered Nurses.Ā 

  • IdentifyingĀ and reporting physical and mental responsesĀ posing harm to the Registered NurseĀ 

  • Obtain and record initial and ongoing patient information throughout theĀ plan of care, including admissions as outlined by UVA Health policy.Ā Ā 

  • Obtain orĀ assistĀ in the collection of specimens for diagnostic or waived tests.Ā 

  • Attend all mandatory in-services and training.

  • Ensure patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital,Ā departmentĀ or unit patient safety initiatives.Ā 

  • Demonstrate ASPIRE Values in all human interactions.Ā 

  • Demonstrates teamwork in the delivery of patient care.Ā Ā 

  • Recognizes the importance ofĀ time sensitiveĀ issues.Ā 

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.Ā 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent

Experience: No experience required

Licensure: American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS Certification required. For Non-Certified team members hired prior to May 11, 2026, certification is notĀ required, as relevant experience will be accepted in its place.Ā 

Must have one of the following:Ā 

  • Certified Nursing AssistantĀ in the Commonwealth of VirginiaĀ Ā 
  • Emergency Medical TechnicianĀ in the Commonwealth of VirginiaĀ Ā 
  • Military Corpsmen/MedicĀ (Combat Medic Specialist /Tactical Combat Casualty CareĀ /Tactical Paramedic)Ā NREMT certificationĀ orĀ Tactical Responder CertificationĀ 
  • LPN licenseĀ in the Commonwealth of VirginiaĀ Ā 
  • Graduate of a certified nursing programĀ Ā 
  • PatientĀ CareĀ TechnicianĀ Certification, preferred National Center of Competency TestingĀ 
  • Currently enrolled student nurses who have successfully completed the Clinical Experience and DidacticĀ 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requiresĀ frequentlyĀ bending/stooping and driving (Home Health Aide only).Ā Ā Proficient communicative,Ā auditoryĀ and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 – 50lbs and > 100lbs (Home Health Aide only).Ā Ā Ā May be exposed to chemicals, blood/bodyĀ fluidsĀ and infectious disease.Ā 

The pay range for this role is $15.07 - $23.36 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
