The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks a highly motivated and detailed-oriented Senior Finance Generalist (Financial Operations Professional 3) to lead and support the department’s financial operations.
This position is responsible for a broad range of financial and administrative functions, including budgeting, payroll, accounting, financial reporting, capital equipment purchasing, and financial compliance. The Senior Finance Generalist serves as a key resource to departmental leadership, ensuring the effective stewardship of financial resources and adherence to University policies and procedures.
The successful candidate will provide strategic financial analysis and operational guidance to support informed decision-making and advance the department's academic and research missions. As the primary financial liaison to the School of Engineering Dean's Office, this individual will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and University partners to support departmental goals and initiatives.

They must be able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and responsiveness.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor’s degree.
Demonstrated proficiency in Workday Financials, including budgeting, period activity pay, costing allocations and adjustments, journal entries, expense reports, and financial reporting.
Advanced proficiency with the Microsoft Office applications.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, balance competing demands, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Commitment to providing exceptional customer service.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a collaborative team.
Demonstrated adaptability and willingness to learn new skills, processes, and responsibilities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Extensive experience using Workday Financials.
Experience with Anaplan financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
Knowledge of University financial policies, procedures, and systems.
Experience supporting financial operations in a higher education environment.
The anticipated hiring range is $75,000–$83,000 annually, commensurate with experience and subject to internal equity, market review, job profile alignment, and applicable approvals.
