The University of Virginia's number one ranked Department of Student Health and Wellness (SHW) provides a comprehensive range of medical, mental health, well-being, and disability support services to all enrolled undergraduate and graduate students. The University of Virginia’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), a unit within the Department of Student Health and Wellness, is seeking to hire a full-time mental health professional for the position of Staff Psychotherapist.

This position provides triage assessment, crisis intervention, brief treatment (individual, couple or group therapy), and referral assistance for students. The Staff Psychotherapist also provides community outreach and serves as a consultant to faculty, staff, parents, students, and other community members seeking assistance in addressing students’ psychological concerns. The Staff Psychotherapist may also offer supervision and didactic instruction to therapists in training.

Staff Psychotherapist responsibilities include:

  • Provide individual and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and clinical consultation.
  • Provide triage and intake assessments
  • Provide daytime and afterhours crisis services as requested
  • Provide consultation to parents, students, faculty, staff, and other community members
  • Facilitate referrals to mental health services in the community
  • Provide outreach to the UVA community
  • Provide supervision and interactive teaching to trainees in psychology as requested
  • Participate in treatment teams, staff meetings, departmental committees, and special projects as requested
  • Maintain ethical and timely documentation of all clinical work in the electronic medical record system
  • Perform all duties in accordance with the SHW Clinical Staff Bylaws, policies, and procedures
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Master’s degree Required
  • Experience: 3 years of post-graduate experience in counseling
  • Licensure: Valid License as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the Commonwealth of Virginia or license-eligible. Must be licensed within 6 months of hire.
  • The successful candidate will pass both a background check and a drug screen.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education: Doctorate in Clinical or Counseling Psychology
  • Experience:
  • 3 years of experience providing individual psychotherapy to adolescents or adults
  • 1 year experience with risk assessment and crisis intervention
  • Experience coordinating care with psychiatrists and/or other medical professionals
  • Licensure: Valid License as a Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia

Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary role involving extensive use of desktop computers. Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings or programs.
