Job Description

The Phlebotomist Trainer/Back-Up Coordinator is responsible for initial, ongoing and training of the Donor Services Staff. Performs donor suitability, histories and blood collection procedures. Ensures the safety of the donor and safety, purity and potency of the blood collected. Assists in the set-up and break down of the mobile site equipment before and after the blood drive (if applicable). Performs various regulated functions related to the care of the blood after collections, including storage and transportation. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Employees must comply with traffic legislation, be conscious of road safety, demonstrate safe driving, and other good road safety habits while driving their personal vehicle for work purposes.  

 

Trainer Duties and Responsibilities

  • Training of Donor Services Employees
  • Updating all Training tests and competency tools as needed
  • Performs Validations of equipment and procedures
  • Assists in maintaining and updating all SOPs

 

Coordinator Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Functions in a leadership role coordinating, operating and evaluating blood drives with the Manager of Donor Services and the Director of Donor Services
  • Provides back up support for screening and phlebotomy procedures as needed
  • Assists, coaches and monitors staff for compliance
  • Supports the philosophy, goals and objectives of the organizations
  • Acts as a role model for staff by adhering to all policies

 

Phlebotomist Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs donor registration process
  • Performs mini-physical
  • Performs medical questionnaire
  • Performs blood collection procedures according to SOPs, including Quality Control
  • Attends to donor’s comfort and safety during and post donation, including those having reactions or complications to the procedure and notifying the Coordinator
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information regarding donors
  • Labels all blood collection materials according to SOP
  • Cares for blood after collection, providing temporary storage, and transportation to the center when necessary
  • Assists in unloading, assembling, maintain, dismantling and reloading of equipment and supplies (if applicable)
  • Completes all required documentation 
  • Complies with LIFELINE safety policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service when dealing with donors, members of the community, and co-workers
  • Communicates staff needs and mobile/truck needs with the appropriate staff
  • Communicates well with Donor Service Manager to help maintain the best working environment for all staff members

 

Training

IWELCOME, ILEAD, Annual cGMP, Annual Safety, Annual Human Resources (Sexual Harassment, Workplace Bullying, Diversity/Unconscious Bias), Medical Ethics, Customer Service, Blood Establishment Computer Systems, and all required departmental and interdepartmental training. 8-10 week on-to-job training for phlebotomy. 

CPR (recommended) and First Aid

Qualifications

                               EDUCATION: High School diploma. Phlebotomy certification preferred. Current CPR Certification

                                       

                               EXPERIENCE: 1 year (or higher)phlebotomy experience.  2-year phlebotomy experience is recommended.  1-year management experience recommended

                                          

                                 SKILLS:                   

  • Language skills must include the ability to read, write, speak English effectively and follow oral and written instructions consistent with policies and procedure, SOPs or other requirements. 
  • Documentation accuracy required. 
  • Ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Effective planning and organizational skills 
  • Demonstrate the ability to multi-task. 
  • Ability to function as a key team member in a high-level production environment coupled with strong organization skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work without direct supervision. 
  • Must be able to make simple decisions based on well-defined choices. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the staff and the public to enhance LIFELINE’s relationship with the community. 
  • Basic computer skills 
  • Demonstrates excellent mentoring skill. 
  • Ability to create testing for new/existing staff.

 

Working Conditions

Functions are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as inclement weather, atmospheric elements and pathogenic substances. Performance of this job could expose the employee to blood-borne pathogens. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

 

Physical Requirements

Employee is required to stand, walk, sit, and have the ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

Must be able to easily use step stool to enter the mobile and the inside trucks.
