Reports To: Office Administrator

The Labor & Employment Paralegal provides comprehensive legal and administrative support to attorneys representing clients in labor and employment matters. The Labor & Employment Paralegal is responsible for managing case files, monitoring court dockets, coordinating dockets of responsible attorney, preparing legal documents, organizing discovery, coordinating witness interviews, and ensuring matters progress efficiently while maintaining the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism. The paralegal will be based out of either the Birmingham, AL office or the Jackson, MS office and will work with attorneys from both offices. 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist attorneys in all phases of employment litigation in federal and state courts. 
  • Prepare and organize pleadings, motions, exhibits, and supporting documentation for filing. 
  • Perform initial document production privilege culls under attorney supervision.
  • Monitor federal, state, and local court rules, filing requirements, procedural updates, and electronic filing processes, including coordinating e-filing and keeping attorneys informed of changes.
  • Conduct factual investigations using publicly available information.
  • Perform basic legal research under attorney supervision.
  • Provide to attorneys initial assessment of discovery responses received from opposing parties.
  • Draft Rule 26(a) disclosures for attorney review.
  • Create Rule 1006 summaries of voluminous documents.
  • Prepare and send subpoenas and review and organize responsive documents.
  • Prepare chronologies, spreadsheets, witness files, and document indexes for cases.
  • Maintain case calendars, litigation deadlines, and scheduling requirements, and proactively communicate upcoming deadlines and requirements to attorneys.
  • Organize and maintain electronic and physical case files. 
  • Prepare deposition notebooks, trial notebooks, hearing binders, and witness materials. 
  • Coordinate trial logistics, including exhibit management and courtroom support. 
  • Draft first versions of discovery requests and responses for attorney review. 
  • Collect, organize, review, and summarize documents produced during discovery. 
  • Coordinate document collection with clients and internal teams. 
  • Assist with document productions, privilege logs, and confidentiality designations. 
  • Support electronic discovery (eDiscovery) processes and document databases. 
  • Communicate professionally with clients regarding document requests and case status. 
  • Coordinate meetings, depositions, mediations, and hearings. 
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding client and employment matters. 
  • Track billable time in accordance with firm standards. 
  • Perform additional duties as assigned. 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Associate or bachelor's degree preferred. 
  • ABA-approved Paralegal Certificate preferred. 
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of labor and employment litigation experience or general litigation experience in a law firm preferred. 
  • Knowledge of and experience working with Excel spreadsheets and various ESI software such as Relativity and DISCO.
  • Experience supporting multiple attorneys in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Knowledge of federal and state court filing requirements. 
  • Strong understanding of litigation timelines and discovery procedures. 
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills. 
  • Ability to prioritize multiple matters with competing deadlines. 
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities. 
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy. 
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with attorneys and professional staff. 
  • Occasional overtime may be required to meet court deadlines and trial schedules. 
  • Limited travel may be required for depositions, hearings, trials, or client meetings.
