Job Summary
The Career Advisor plays a critical role in expanding student access to career services and delivering high-quality career readiness programming. This position provides direct student support through individual coaching, group programming, and event execution, while supporting the day-to-day operations of the Career Design & Exploration office.
The Career Advisor focuses on high-volume student engagement, career education delivery, and logistical execution of career programs and events. This role collaborates closely with the Associate Director and Director to ensure students have timely, equitable access to career resources, experiences, and opportunities that support their academic and professional success.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This role supervises undergraduate student staff.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Individual Student Support (50%)
- Provide one-on-one career counseling and coaching, including:
- Resume and cover letter reviews.
- Interview preparation and mock interviews.
- Internship and job search strategies.
- Networking and professional branding (LinkedIn, Handshake, personal statements, etc.).
- Salary negotiation and offer evaluation guidance.
- Serve as a primary point of access for students seeking career services, ensuring timely support and appropriate referrals.
- Support students in navigating career platforms and tools, including Handshake and other career technologies.
- Assist with triaging career-related inquiries from students, alumni, and campus partners.
- Provide one-on-one career counseling and coaching, including:
Career Programming & Workshop Delivery (20%)
- Plan, coordinate, and deliver career readiness workshops and programs focused on:
- Career exploration
- Resume and interview preparation
- Job and internship search strategies
- Workplace professionalism and expectations
- Execute logistics for career-related programming, including room scheduling, registration, materials, and attendance tracking.
- Collaborate with campus partners to support co-sponsored career programs and increase student participation.
- Assist with the assessment of career programs to ensure alignment with student needs and institutional goals.
- Plan, coordinate, and deliver career readiness workshops and programs focused on:
Career Intern Supervision (15%)
- Supervise Career Interns, providing training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to support career programming and daily operations.
- Berwick Career Closet Oversight
- Marketing Initiatives
- Operations and Events
- Coordinate Career Intern assignments, projects, and daily responsibilities to align with departmental priorities and career services initiatives.
- Foster a supportive and professional team environment by conducting regular 1:1s, providing performance feedback, evaluating student progress, and encouraging the development of career competencies.
- Supervise Career Interns, providing training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to support career programming and daily operations.
Event Coordination & Execution (10%)
- Support the planning and execution of major career-related events, including:
- Professional development sessions and workshops
- On-campus recruitment activities
- Career fairs and networking events
- Coordinate event logistics, including employer communication, student registration, and on-site support.
- Track participation and support post-event follow-up activities.
Operational Support (5%)
- Provide operational support for the day-to-day functions of the Career Design & Exploration office, ensuring smooth delivery of student-facing services.
- Assist with the coordination and execution of office initiatives, projects, and special events as assigned.
- Serve as a point of contact for routine inquiries, escalating complex issues to the Associate Director or Director as appropriate.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong interpersonal skills and a student-centered approach, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse populations.
- Comfort with frequent student interaction in a high-volume, service-oriented environment.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with professional staff, faculty, student employees, and campus partners.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Outlook, and database or CRM systems.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high levels of accuracy and service quality.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion when handling sensitive information.
Education, Certificates, Licenses, and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Master’s degree in higher education/student affairs or related field from a regionally accredited college or university preferred;
- A minimum of six months to two years of experience, on a college or university campus
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach.
- Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and other business machines.
- Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and by phone.
