Mayo Clinic is seeking an accomplished, collaborative, and visionary surgeon to serve as Chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at its Destination Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida. This is a senior leadership role within one of the nation’s most respected academic medical institutions, offering the opportunity to shape the future of cardiothoracic surgical care across clinical practice, education, and research. 

The Chair will provide strategic and operational leadership for a nationally recognized department, advancing Mayo Clinic’s integrated model of care while fostering innovation, multidisciplinary collaboration, and excellence in patient outcomes. 

About the Department 

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Mayo Clinic Florida is a well-established, high-performing clinical and academic enterprise comprised of six cardiothoracic surgeons supported by a highly experienced team of 12 advanced practice practitioners. The department delivers comprehensive adult cardiothoracic surgical services and works in close collaboration with cardiovascular medicine, transplant, critical care, anesthesiology, and perioperative services. The Chair will have the opportunity to build upon a strong foundation of clinical excellence while shaping the department’s future growth, innovation, and academic impact. 

Responsibilities 

Reporting to the CEO of Mayo Clinic Florida and working closely with site and enterprise leaders, the Chair will be responsible for: 

  • Providing overall strategic direction for the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, aligned with Mayo Clinic’s mission and values 

  • Advancing clinical excellence and growth, including outcomes, access, quality, and patient experience 

  • Leading and supporting a high-performing faculty, with a strong emphasis on recruitment, retention, mentorship, and faculty development 

  • Driving innovation across clinical practice, education, and research, including collaboration with cardiovascular medicine, transplant, critical care, anesthesiology, and related specialties 

  • Supporting and expanding academic and scholarly productivity, including clinical trials, outcomes research, and educational initiatives 

  • Ensuring responsible financial stewardship, resource alignment, and operational effectiveness 

  • Serving as a key institutional leader within Mayo Clinic Florida and across the Mayo Clinic enterprise
