General Description / Primary Purpose

This is work inspecting and treating buildings and grounds for pest infestations requiring restricted use pesticides.
 

Job Functions

  • Inspects building interiors, exteriors, and adjacent grounds for insect or rodent infestations.

  • Mixes and applies restricted‑use pesticides in accordance with regulations and safety standards.

  • Operates and maintains a variety of pesticide application equipment.

  • Assists with fumigation activities to control pest infestations.

  • Removes troublesome or dangerous vertebrates as part of a rabies control program.

  • Prepares and maintains daily records related to pesticide usage and pest infestations.

  • During declared campus emergencies, this position may be required to perform specific job‑related duties at a designated off‑campus location or place of residence.

Supplementary responsibilities

  • Participate in special event set ups and other work

  • Assist with campus maintenance emergencies

  • Assist with new utilities installation and maintenance of existing utilities

  • Manages work orders

  • Raking leaves

  • Prescribed burning.

 

Machines/Equipment used regularly

Riding/walk-behind mowers; power edgers/blowers; chain saws; hand tools; power landscaping equipment; small farm tractors; trucks/trucksters; power hedge trimmers

Supervision Received

Close supervision. The incumbent’s work is reviewed by the supervisor for accuracy and to ensure instructions are being followed.

 

Required Qualifications

High school diploma and 1+ years of relevant experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Must meet the requirements of Chapters 482 and 487, Florida Statutes

Knowledge of landscape maintenance techniques. Knowledge of the procedures and methods used in proper tree maintenance. Skill in safely and effectively operating riding mowers. Skill in using supplemental landscape maintenance equipment including power edgers, string trimmers, blowers, and power hedge trimmers. Ability to use hand tools such as rakes, shovels, lopping shears, pole saws, and the like during landscape construction, modification, and maintenance. Ability to lift and carry loads of 50 pounds of fertilizer, grass seed, asphalt patch, sod, etc., and push or pull small equipment. Ability to walk long distances on level and unleveled terrain while using equipment. Ability to get on and off riding mowers, carts, trucksters and tractors quickly and with ease in cases of emergency. Ability to understand University rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Ability to communicate information effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and within extreme temperature ranges. Visual ability, corrected, to observe people and/or vehicles moving through the work areas and redirect work or equipment tin order to avoid injuries to the people or damage to the vehicles. Possesses the ability to pound metal stakes into the ground with a sledge hammer and lift heavy tent poles into place.
