Job Summary: 

The Residence Hall Director & Residential Education Coordinator is a live-in, full-time professional staff member within the Division of Student Affairs, serving as a dynamic leader in the residential community. This dual role position focuses on managing the overall operations of a residence hall while coordinating residential education initiatives. Responsibilities include supervising student staff, developing community-building programs, crisis management, policy enforcement, and fostering an inclusive environment that supports academic success and personal development. This position combines responsibilities for hall management and staff supervision with leadership in student learning and development through a residential curriculum framework. 

Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Residence Life and Student Development, the position manages one to two residential buildings, supervises 5–12 Resident Assistants, implements residential programming model and designs intentional learning experiences that foster student success, retention, and personal growth. The role also supports the university’s strategic priorities through innovative programming, academic interventions, crisis response, and inclusive practices that promote a vibrant living-learning environment. 

Essential Job Functions:

Residential Community Leadership and Management

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for residential communities aligned with university goals.
  • Ensure residential facilities meet health, safety, and security standards. 
  • Promote an inclusive community that supports the needs of underrepresented student populations. 
  • Oversee the daily operations of one to two residence halls. 
  • Assist in hall security and facility management efforts, including key control and health/safety inspections.

Student Staff Supervision and Development

  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate a staff of 5 – 12 Resident Assistants: lead staff training, development, and team-building activities. 
  • Conduct weekly staff meetings and one-on-one check-ins; ensure alignment with departmental goals and student needs. 
  • Support staff in programming efforts, conflict resolution, academic support, and crisis management.

Residential Curriculum and Educational Initiatives   

  • Lead department and campus-wide residential education initiatives, including large-scale events, targeted programming, and pop-up engagement.  
  • Implement and assess residential curriculum goals and co-curricular strategies, ensuring alignment with the university’s mission and student affairs learning outcomes. 
  • Train housing staff on educational outcomes, programming assessment, academic interventions, and inclusive excellence. 
  • Meet regularly with Resident Assistants and learning community partners to support the execution of community development and learning plans.

Academic Engagement and Support

  • Coordinate academic intervention strategies in conjunction with University College for residents and staff, including outreach to students in academic distress and connection to campus resources 
  • Develop academic recognition initiatives for high-performing residents each semester. 
  • Develop and structure Living Learning Communities within the department.

Student Conduct and Community Standards

  • Serve as an administrative hearing officer for conduct violations related to residence life and housing policies. 
  • Educate residents about community standards, policies, and their rights and responsibilities. 
  • Maintain accurate conduct records and submit timely reports using the Maxient conduct management system, including instances such as students of concern, student behavioral issues, sexual misconduct allegations, and other relevant student conduct matters. 
  • Advise and support residents in their academic, social, and personal development.

Crisis Intervention and Student Support

  • Provide crisis intervention and support to residents, making referrals to the CARE team or other support offices as appropriate. 
  • Participate in a rotating on-call duty schedule that includes after-hours, weekend, and holiday coverage to respond to student emergencies and incidents. 
  • Assist in campus retention and student success initiatives through relationship-building, outreach, and early intervention. 

Collaboration and University Engagement   

  • Support the development and implementation of residential learning communities in collaboration with faculty and staff. 
  • Collaborate with campus partners to enhance academic support, wellness initiatives, and identity-based programming within the residence halls. 
  • Participate in departmental recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation processes for student and professional staff. 
  • Collect and analyze data on housing trends, student satisfaction, and program outcomes to inform strategic decisions. 
  • Recommend policy improvements in support of student success and retention.
  • Foster relationships with key campus partners, including Academic Advising, Student Health & Wellbeing, Student Conduct, Student Engagement, and Career Services. 
  • Collaborate with the Office of Engagement to promote, support, and actively participate in campus events and initiatives that enhance student involvement and community building.  
  • Contribute to housing and residence life-wide initiatives, planning, assessment, and special projects. 
  • Serve as a member of university-wide committees and emergency response teams.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Residence Life & Student Development.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Knowledge of The Housing Director (THD) through StarRez software, Adobe Suite, and proficient in using Microsoft Office suite. 
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Must prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment, develop communication strategies and work with internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. 
  • Strong attention to detail; ability to perform duties with high accuracy. 
  • Ability to work with and maintain confidential University information. 
  • Ability to adapt to a flexible schedule that includes evening and weekend activities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum one year experience in University Residence Life and Housing or Student Activities is required. 
  • Experience in student accountability and an awareness of emerging issues in higher education, residence life and housing, community building, and student learning.
  • Proven competence in leadership and supervision of students and staff.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s preferred in student personnel, student development, or related field)

Terms of Employment:

  • This is a full-time, 12-month, live-in position. 
  • Evening and weekend On-Call Duty Rotation Responsibilities Required.

Physical Demands:

  • Light sedentary office work. 
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
