JOB SUMMARY:

Jeffreson County is seeking well-qualified, motivated Senior Water Pollution Control Technicians to help determine sources of water pollution and contamination and employ methods to reduce the pollution or contamination. Their work involves the collection and analysis of water and wastewater samples for the purpose of reporting to state and federal regulatory agencies. As a part of their analysis, employees in this job class perform a variety of tests, to include various chemical and biological laboratory analyses. Senior Water Pollution Control Technicians also have some administrative duties and responsibilities. Their work is performed with some latitude for independent action within established policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

  • Driver's license.

  • Completion of 24 semester hours of coursework in chemistry or biology.

  • Experience collecting environmental water quality samples.

  • Experience analyzing environmental water quality samples.

  • Experience interpreting the test data from environmental water quality samples.

TARGETED QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Jefferson County. These qualifications may be considered by Jefferson County when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

  • ADEM Wastewater Operator Grade III or IV Certification.

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or related field of study from an accredited college or university.

  • Experience working in a wastewater, industrial, or environmental lab.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Accepts and prepares various wastewater samples for testing by inspecting, measuring and logging the sample for various biological and chemical testing.

  • Conducts laboratory analyses of various samples by checking standards, measuring samples, and calculating biological and chemical standards in order to determine water quality.

  • Maintains equipment, laboratory supplies, and instruments in accordance with best practices and Standard Methods textbook (Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Assurance) to ensure sterile environment free of contamination in order to conduct accurate and valid assessments.

  • Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.

  • Trains coworkers on new instruments or equipment.

  • Replicates a duplicate and checks the standard or lab control following the analysis of every 20 samples in order to determine the reliability of the testing conducted.

  • Calibrates meters, thermometers, sampling equipment, instruments, scales, and/or balances according to manufacturer manuals.

  • Determines trends in pollution by analyzing sampling and inspection data.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is primarily performed indoors in a laboratory setting. Work may involve using various laboratory equipment and instruments, such as scales, glass containers, beakers, etc. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals or other potentially hazardous conditions involving testing equipment.
