Lecturer in American Sign Language

Job Summary

The Department of Literature and Language at East Tennessee State University seeks to fill a nine-month, full-time Lecturer position in American Sign Language. This is a one-year, in-person position for the 2026-2027 academic year, and classes will be taught on the Johnson City, Tennessee main campus. This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits. The expected course load is 4 sections per semester, or 8 sections for the academic year.

Located in the Appalachian Highlands of Northeast Tennessee between the Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains, East Tennessee State University is a state-assisted and Carnegie-classified Doctoral Research Intensive University of more than 15,000 students. 

The Department of Literature and Language is a large, vibrant, and diverse department made up of English, World Languages, Film and Media Studies, Creative Writing, and other related disciplines. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• The successful candidate will be qualified to teach courses in American Sign Language and/or Deaf Culture.
• Preference will be given to candidates who are familiar with the TRUE+WAY ASL curriculum.

Required Qualifications

• The successful candidate will have a Master's degree in ASL, ASL Instruction, Deaf Culture/Education, or a closely-related field, as well as relevant teaching experience.
