Public Safety Specialist

Pay Grade(s): 8 ($27.79+ DOE)
Purpose:
The Public Safety Specialist supports the Public Safety Department's coordinated response to domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) throughout Southeast Alaska. The position coordinates multidisciplinary response efforts, supports law enforcement operations, strengthens interagency communication, facilitates referrals to Tribal and community resources, and ensures continuity of services between the criminal justice system and victim service providers. Working with Village Public Safety Officers (VPSOs), Tribal Court, law enforcement, schools, emergency management, and community partners, specialists develop public safety initiatives, regional response protocols, training, and additional grant activities that enhance coordinated responses to violent crime.
As part of the Office on Violence against Women (OVW) Rural Domestic Violence Project, the Public Safety Specialist supports community outreach, prevention education, regional safety initiatives, and collaboration with public safety partners serving rural and Tribal communities. Following initial law enforcement contact, the specialist serves as the Public Safety liaison by coordinating response activities and ensuring continuity of services through referral to the Community Behavioral Advocate within Cultural Behavioral Services for ongoing advocacy and support. The position also supports the Public Safety Division's Tribal Emergency Operations Center (TEOC), emergency preparedness, and additional regional response efforts.
Essential Functions. An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
• Coordinate OVW Rural Domestic Violence Project activities within the Public Safety Division.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary team response efforts with law enforcement, Tribal Court, VPSOs, and community partners.
• Assist with planning and delivery of training, multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, and coordinated response initiatives.
• Coordinate community outreach, youth prevention education, and public safety awareness activities.
• Assist with planning and delivery of training, MDT meetings, and coordinated response initiatives.
• Collaborate with tribal, community, and public safety partners to strengthen coordinated responsesÂ
• Assist with project tracking, reporting, and confidential recordkeepingÂ
• Maintain confidential records, collect program data, and prepare grant reports.Â
• Support development of the Regional Response Guide and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) Community Response Plan
• Support TEOC ICS training and emergency preparedness efforts, ensuring operational readiness in coordination with public safety initiatives.
• Other duties as assigned
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities. A comprehensive set of capabilities required to perform job tasks effectively:

• Ability to work collaboratively with law enforcement, courts, schools, and community organizations
• Strong organizational and documentation skills
• Ability to work independently while following established procedures and grant requirements
• Cultural humility and respect when working with diverse communities
• Knowledge of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures or willingness to learn
Minimum Qualifications. (education, experience, skills):
• Associate degree in a related field OR a High School Diploma/GED with equivalent related experience.
• One (1) – Two (2) years of public safety, outreach, victim services, program coordination, or related field
• Experience working with community partners or public service organizations
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in sensitive situations
• Must be 21 years of age with a Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications (education, experience, skills):
• Training facilitation experience
• Experience working in rural or Tribal communities
• Experience working with grant-funded programs

• The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs.
