Education/Outreach Assistant

EDUCATION OUTREACH ASSISTANT

Primary Purpose    Support the teaching team to deliver a high-quality learning environment for children and families. 

Essential Duties    

●    Support the teaching team with proper setup and breakdown of site, co-teach lessons, and prepare materials;

●    Assist in the implementation of lesson plans, facilitate classroom instruction and learning experiences at program sites; 

●    Assist with monthly field trips;

●    Model, teach, and engage with enrolled families in a professional manner that encourages caregivers to be their keiki’s first and foremost teacher; 

●    Participate in team meetings to implement high-quality, culturally appropriate lesson plans for keiki ages birth-five years old; 

●    Assist in the implementation of curriculum that is developmentally appropriate and culturally relevant for children and caregivers; 

●    Assist in wrap-around caregiver support, assistance with community resources and referrals, and support with caregiver/keiki assessments, when needed. 

Other Duties    Other duties as assigned include, but not limited to, completing all forms and documentations such as reports related to grant objectives, professional development evaluations, and data collection for the program.

Work Hours    

●    A 10-month work schedule that closely aligns with the Hawai'i Department of Education's paid leave calendar; 

●    Monday through Friday, hours vary by site and are determined by Lead Education Specialist; 

●    Consistent and reliable attendance; 

●    Some events and professional development may occur during nights or weekends.

Working Conditions   

 ●    Office setting and program sites;

●    Travel in program vehicle to and from program sites;

●    Travel to the neighbor islands and continental U.S. may be required. 

Equipment Use    Program vehicle, office equipment (computer, printer, copier, scanner, bluetooth, laminator, shredder), site and facility equipment.

Physical

●    Capable of strenuous activities which may include loading/unloading of vehicles, washing of the vehicles, mats and tarps; set up/break down of tents;

●    Requires lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds on a regular basis; 

●    Able to sit and work on floor; kneel and bend; 

●    Outdoors: Exposure to sun, wind, dust, vog, etc.;

●    Indoors: Exposure to normal office environments, A/C, fans, etc.

Communication

●    Exhibit courteous and professional demeanor towards program participants, vendors and partners, staff and administration via verbal, written, physical, and electronic correspondence in a timely manner;

●    Able to address participants individually or in groups through speaking, demonstrating activities, singing, dancing, and signing; 

●    Exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills; 

●    Properly handle and maintain highly confidential information 

Minimum Qualification Requirements    

Education

●    High school diploma or equivalent;

●    Knowledge and understanding of Hawaiian culture and values;

●    Preference: Some ECE coursework.

Experience

●    Three (3) months experience working with young children ages birth through five (5) in an educational setting; 

●    Some experience working with families and individuals in a caregiving capacity;

●    Basic working knowledge of Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel) and Google Drive (Meetings, Docs, Sheets, Calendar).

Driving

●    Valid driver’s license;

●    A safe and responsible driving record.
