Job Description

JOB PURPOSE: 

The Senior Accountant for Stadium Management Corporation (SMC) is a key member of the Finance team responsible for supporting the financial operations of Wings Event Center (WEC) and the Kalamazoo Wings ECHL team. This role leads critical components of the month-end and year-end close processes, ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, maintains strong balance sheet and internal control processes, and provides financial analysis to support operational and strategic decision making. The Senior Accountant partners with multiple departments and business leaders to support the unique financial and operational needs of a sports and live entertainment organization and professional hockey team. 

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

May include, but not limited to:

  • Lead significant portions of the month-end and year-end close processes
  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, deferrals, and other accounting adjustments
  • Review general ledger activity for accuracy, proper classification, and appropriate period recognition
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules
  • Perform financial statement and variance analysis and communicate significant findings to management
  • Complete and review monthly balance sheet reconciliations, researching and resolving reconciling items
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations and oversee electronic payments, deposits, and other banking activity
  • Monitor and reconcile company credit card activity and ensure compliance with company policies
  • Support accounting and reconciliation of ticketing, concessions, sponsorship, merchandise, special events, and other venue and team revenue streams
  • Support event settlements and ensure event-related revenues and expenses are accurately recorded
  • Review accounts receivable and accounts payable activity and assist with resolution of aging or unusual balances
  • Prepare applicable sales and use tax filings and year-end information reporting
  • Lead or significantly contribute to annual budgeting, monthly forecasting, and departmental KPI reporting
  • Partner with department leaders to research variances, improve financial processes, and support operational decisions
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen internal controls and improve the accuracy and efficiency of accounting processes
  • Support fixed asset and capital spending accounting and documentation
  • Assist with internal and external audits and maintain appropriate supporting documentation
  • Maintain applicable licenses, renewals, and other financial compliance requirements
  • Participate in Greenleaf Hospitality Group Finance initiatives and other projects as needed

WHAT YOU NEED FOR THIS POSITION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting principles
  • Demonstrated experience with month-end and year-end close processes
  • Advanced understanding of general ledger accounting, A/P, A/R, accrual accounting, balance sheet reconciliations, and internal controls
  • Experience preparing and analyzing financial statements
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and meet deadlines
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google suite
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, data analysis)
  • Experience with Workday and Toast systems preferred
  • Sports, entertainment, hospitality, or other high-volume transactional accounting experience preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with Finance, operational departments, and leadership
  • High level of discretion and confidentiality
