Position Summary / Career Interest:

The Diabetes Educator educates patients with diabetes on meal planning and general diabetes self-management education. They participate in the development and implementation of new/current nutrition and education programs. The Diabetes Educator assists in maintaining ADA accreditation and continuous quality improvement projects.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
  • Be available in clinic most days of the week for additional one-on-one teaching as needed (e.g., instruction on insulin pen use, glucometers, insulin pump)
  • Conduct DSME and/or nutrition clinics 4 days per week
  • Coordinate, manage, and teach group diabetes education class
  • Coordinate/implement other external events as appropriate
  • Create and implement an annual Diabetes Day event Create and implement CQI projects (a requirement of ADA recognition)
  • Assist the Education Coordinator with maintaining ADA recognition Help with coordination and teaching of other classes (e.g., Managing Diabetes and Pump Preview)
  • Helps maintain ADA recognition and keep up to date Work closely with the administrative staff on scheduling and other matters Work with vendors for samples and updates
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelors Degree in an appropriate field (e.g., Nursing, Dietetics-Nutrition, or a biological science) from an accredited college or university.
  • High School Graduate
  • 2 or more years of clinical experience in diabetes and/or nutrition education.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master's Degree in an appropriate field (e.g., Nursing, Dietetics-Nutrition, or a biological science) from an accredited college or university.
  • 2 or more years of clinical experience in an ADA or AADE accredited program.

Required Licensure and Certification
  • CDE certification (NCBDE) required within 12 months of hire.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) - Single State - State Board of Nursing in state of practice. OR
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) - Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) in state of practice.
  • Basic Life Support Heartsaver (BLS HS) (Non-Clinical) - American Heart Association (AHA)
