Overview

Harvesters, a regional food bank serving a 27 county area across northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri, is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Director of Finance. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Finance serves as a key member of the Finance leadership team, helping to ensure the effective execution of financial operations, planning, reporting, compliance, and stewardship activities across the organization. This role partners closely with the CFO and organizational leaders to strengthen financial processes, support informed decision-making, and advance Harvesters' strategic goals. This role is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (3 days in office, 2 days remote).

Responsibilities

Leadership & Department Management

  • Lead and support a team of finance professionals, including the Senior Accounting Manager and Accounting Manager.
  • Ensure recurring Finance Department work is completed across all areas of responsibility.
  • Drive continuous improvement in finance operations, processes, and service delivery.

 

Financial Strategy & Planning

  • Oversee organizational budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Support organizational planning through financial analysis and strategic guidance.
  • Translate financial requirements, risks, analyses, and decisions into actionable guidance for organizational leaders.

 

Accounting, Reporting & Compliance

  • Oversee general ledger accounting, financial close, and financial reporting activities.
  • Ensure compliance with audit, Single Audit, tax, entity compliance, and government award requirements.
  • Lead the development and improvement of financial policies, standards, processes, and procedures.
  • Ensure accurate financial determinations, resolutions, and reporting outputs.

 

Financial Operations & Stewardship

  • Oversee accounts payable, expense management, receivables, and collections processes.
  • Provide oversight of restriction tracking, treasury management, liquidity, investments, financing, and debt obligations.
  • Manage relationships with financial advisors and other key external partners.
  • Support programmatic costing and managerial accounting analysis.

 

Systems & Technology

  • Lead the adoption and optimization of finance technologies and automation tools.
  • Promote efficient use of systems to improve financial reporting, analysis, and operational effectiveness.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of seven years of accounting or finance experience, including at least three years in a financial leadership role required.
  • Two or more years of demonstrated success in the nonprofit sector is preferred.
  • Previous experience in industries with inventory, warehousing, and/or logistics operations is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, accounting principles, financial reporting, compliance, and financial analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop finance professionals.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial information for diverse audiences.
  • Advanced proficiency with accounting software, Microsoft Excel, and financial systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA designation or Master's degree in a finance-related field preferred.
