Summary/Objective

Maintain large native plant gardens for public enjoyment and education.

Essential Job Duties

Maintain large native plant gardens in accordance with area landscape plan.
Weeding, planting, pruning, mulching and other maintainence practices for native plants including trees and shrubs; mowing, application of herbicides, etc.
Operate and maintain hand tools and power equipment for landscaping and green house operation.
Control exotic and invasive species through manual and chemical means.
Grow seeding native plants for special events and maintaining greenhouse for optimal growth - in cooperation with other staff and volunteers.
Assist with educational programming related to native plants.
Communicate with internal and external customers and stakeholders regarding the nature center and its landscape.

Ancillary Job Duties

Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

At least one year of native plant garden maintenance preferred.
Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to operate tools and equipment for garden management.
Knowledge of basic native plant garden maintenance practices.
Ability to define a problem, analyze relevant information, and develop solutions and plans to solve the problem.
Ability to interact with the general public in a professional manner.
Ability to develop cooperative working relationships.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to work varying shifts and hours, as needed.

Work Environment

Frequently work in outdoor weather which may be hot, cold, wet or humid.
Occasionally exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.
May be subject to exposure to mechanical oils, fumes or airborne particles and work near moving mechanical parts.

Physical Abilities

Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
Frequently operate tools and heavy equipment safely.
Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more, and three-dimensional vision
Regularly lift up to 20 pounds and correctly lift up to 50 pounds.
Regularly lift up to 5 pounds, correctly lift up to 50 pounds.
Concentrated attention is required at all times.
Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
