Custodian – Senior Citizens Facility
Position Summary
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment throughout the Senior Citizens Facility. This position performs routine cleaning, sanitation, light maintenance, and facility-support duties to ensure the building is ready for seniors, staff, visitors, programs, and community activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Clean and sanitize offices, activity rooms, common areas, restrooms, hallways, kitchens, and other assigned areas.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and maintain floors and other surfaces.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, including door handles, tables, chairs, counters, and other high-use areas.
  • Empty trash and recycling receptacles and dispose of waste properly.
  • Clean and maintain restrooms, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, floors, and fixtures.
  • Replenish restroom and facility supplies as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen and dining areas, including counters, sinks, tables, and appliances as assigned.
  • Assist with preparing rooms for senior activities, meetings, meals, classes, and special events.
  • Set up and break down tables, chairs, and other furnishings as needed.
  • Monitor assigned areas for spills, hazards, damage, or maintenance concerns and report issues promptly.
  • Maintain appropriate cleaning supplies and notify the supervisor when supplies need to be reordered.
  • Follow proper procedures for handling cleaning chemicals, equipment, and hazardous materials.
  • Use cleaning equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Assist with light facility maintenance tasks within the scope of the position.
  • Maintain sidewalks, entrances, and other exterior areas as assigned, including removal of litter and debris.
  • Support a clean and orderly environment that promotes the safety, comfort, dignity, and well-being of senior participants.
  • Follow all organizational policies, procedures, safety requirements, and confidentiality standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Senior-Centered Responsibilities
  • Treat all senior participants, visitors, volunteers, and staff with courtesy, dignity, patience, and respect.
  • Maintain awareness of potential safety hazards that may present a particular concern for older adults, including wet floors, clutter, blocked walkways, and inadequate lighting.
  • Promptly report safety concerns, accidents, or incidents to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Help maintain an environment that is accessible, welcoming, and comfortable for older adults and individuals with disabilities.
Qualifications
  • Previous custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, or facility-maintenance experience preferred.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and manage assigned cleaning responsibilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with seniors, staff, visitors, and community members.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism.
  • Ability to safely use cleaning products, equipment, and supplies.
  • Must demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and attention to detail.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and move throughout the facility for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to push and pull cleaning carts and equipment.
  • Ability to occasionally lift items weighing approximately 25–50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to perform repetitive cleaning and maintenance tasks.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be provided to qualified individuals with disabilities.
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily indoors in a Senior Citizens Facility and may occasionally require outdoor work. The position may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, bodily fluids, odors, and varying temperatures. Proper personal protective equipment and safety procedures must be followed.
Schedule
The work schedule will be determined based on facility needs, programs, and operational requirements. Occasional evening, weekend, or special-event work may be required.
