Job Description Summary:

The Faculty Optometrist in the Department of Ophthalmology provides clinical, teaching and research duties, as their experience and interest allows. This position also supervises medical students and residents in clinics as well as participates in the didactic teaching program. Faculty interested in research may be afforded protected time to complete clinical and bench research, but will be encouraged to participate in clinical research and scientific presentations at national/regional meetings in addition to their clinical and teaching duties.

Job Description:

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provide services as an Optometrist, comprising of comprehensive clinics for all ages.

  • Participate in the didactic teaching program including supervising medical students and residents.

  • Participate in JayDoc clinics.

  • Maintain a professional and courteous relationship with patients as monitored by the hospital's patient experience survey.

  • Serve on departmental committees and provide other service to the School of Medicine and the University as needed.

  • Participate in clinical research and scientific presentations at national/regional meetings as appropriate with academic track.

  • Provide clinical and surgical services to the VA and/or other sites under Professional Services Agreement with The University of Kansas Health System.

Required Qualifications

Education: Doctor of Optometry Degree (OD) from an Accredited School of Optometry.

This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position.  The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Licensed in the State of Kansas of eligible for licensure in Kansas.

  • Board eligible or board certified in Optometry.

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:

  • Experience with fitting and care coordination of medically necessary contact lenses. Managing post-operative care for specialty surgeons.

  • Experience with academic background involving teaching with interest in clinical or basic research.

  • Experience in growing own research programs with the ability to obtain funding from public and private sources.
